It is with profound sadness, but with hearts full of gratitude for a life well lived, that the family of Elizabeth “Betty” Luella Mickelberry (née Pringle) announces her peaceful passing in Red Deer, Alberta, on Monday, July 27, 2026, at the age of 87 years.

Betty was predeceased by the love of her life, her husband, James “Jim” Mickelberry. They were married on April 24, 1957, and they shared more than 60 wonderful years together. Betty cared devotedly for Jim until his passing in October 2017.

Betty considered her greatest accomplishment to be her family. She is survived by her children: Rod Mickelberry (Vienxgay), Darlene Spicer, Kevin Mickelberry (Monica), and Karen Peden (Tom). She was a proud grandmother to Trisha, Jessica (Sean), Robyn (Kyle), Samantha (Jim), and Blair (Shelby), and was blessed with five great-grandchildren—Dustin, Bridget, Hannah, Larry, and Hazel—all of whom brought her immense joy. She leaves behind a legacy of love, generosity, resilience, and grace that will continue through the generations she nurtured. She will also be deeply missed by her large extended family, including her siblings, nieces, nephews, and many dear friends whose lives were enriched by her kindness and gentle spirit.

Betty was born on May 21, 1939, on the family farm near Carnduff, Saskatchewan, to William and Annie Pringle. Growing up as one of 16 children, she learned early the values that would guide her throughout her life: hard work, honesty, and kindness.

Betty began working at just 12 years old at the Red and White Store in Carnduff. She later spent more than 20 years at Safeway, where she was known for her pristine white uniform with matching hanky and earrings, her strong work ethic, and her endless energy.

Community was important to Betty. She was a long-time member of the Oil Wives Club, joining as a young mother while living in Saskatchewan. Through the club, she formed many lifelong friendships which she treasured. Betty also volunteered for the Festival of Trees and at the Red Deer Regional Hospital, where she knitted hats for newborn babies, donating hundreds over the years. She was an avid puzzler, a great dancer, and an enthusiastic curler well into her 70s. She was also an exceptional baker, happiest when sharing homemade treats and something sweet with those she loved.

Above all, Betty loved spending time with friends and gathering with family for holidays and celebrations. Her love language was food, and she made sure everyone was well fed and happy. Whether there were four people around the table or forty, there was always room for one more.
