Our family is deeply saddened to share the sudden loss of our Patriarch – husband, dad, papa and pa, Alan Samuel ‘Al’ Glover in Red Deer on Tuesday, April 11, 2023 at the age of 83 years.
Al was born September 25, 1939, at Strathclair, Manitoba to Archie and Millie Glover. The second of two sons (older brother, Dale), the family moved to Winnipeg, and the boys grew up in Fort Garry, in homes built by their father, Archie.
Al excelled at sports during his childhood, playing upper-level hockey, softball, and golf. All passions that continued long past his playing days.
He is a member of The Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame and Museum with his 1967 – 1968 softball team The Molson Canadians, for outstanding achievement in the Team category.
After graduation, Al spent one year at Accounting College before going to work in the mailroom at International Harvester Trucks in Winnipeg, where he was soon promoted to Truck Sales – apparently, because the Sales Department needed a strong ball player on their softball team. He proved himself adept at sales, however, and moved up through the ranks to become Branch Manager.
He met his “Bootie” Patsy Foley at a local dance, and they were married on November 4, 1961 with daughter, Lori arriving in 1963 and son, Bradley in 1968.
Al’s career growth at International Harvester continued with a promotion and transfer to Vancouver, British Columbia, as Regional Sales Manager in 1971.
The family spent five years in Vancouver, before Al purchased the Red Deer IH Truck Dealership in 1976. From then, until his retirement in 1999, Al was honoured many times as one of International’s top North American Truck Dealers. International’s prestigious “Circle of Excellence” program, awarded yearly, provided Pat and Al with many beautiful travel opportunities while acquiring friends from across the continent.
Al will be lovingly remembered by his wife of over sixty-one years, Pat (nee Foley); his daughter, Lori (Brad); his son, Brad (Shauna); his grandchildren, Alandra (Garrett); Braden (Payton); Ashton (Chris) and Tanner; and his great grandchildren, Grey and Blayke.
He will also be sadly missed by his brother, Dale Glover, his sister-in-law, Rita Foley (Garrie Smith), his brother-in-law, Doug Foley (Janice), numerous nieces and nephews, and Ron and Louise Dufresne and the Janes Family.
Al was predeceased by his parents, his in-laws, George and Helen Foley, his sisters-in-law, Maureen Glover, Gerry Oakley and Lenore Heatherington; his brothers-in-law, John Foley and Ted Oakley, and Pat and Al’s lifelong besties, Tom and Doreen Beggs.
A Celebration of Al’s Life will be held at the Harvest Center, Westerner Park, 4847A – 19 Street, Red Deer, Alberta on Friday, April 28, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. The Service will be live streamed, and guests are invited to go to www.parklandfuneralhome.com just prior to 1:00 p.m. and click on the Live Stream button.
In lieu of flowers, if desired, Memorial Donations in Al’s honor may be made directly to the Red Deer Hospice Society at www.reddeerhospice.com or to the Red Deer Regional Health Foundation at www.rdrhfoundation.com.
The family extends their special thanks to Al and Pat’s wonderful and caring neighbours, Shelley and Jack Krammer and Carolyn and Bill Miller. Your friendship and support to our family will always be remembered.
