Mrs. Reta Elizabeth Coubrough (nee Nobbs) of Blackfalds, Alberta passed away after a battle with Alzheimer’s, at the Lacombe Hospital Palliative Care Unit, on Wednesday, July 20, 2022, at the age of 83 years. Reta was born in Edmonton, Alberta on July 31, 1938. She was raised in Edmonton with many great stories of life with her family; growing up when horses were used a lot, she had a real love of horses that she shared with her late father, Jim Nobbs. She met the love of her life, Wayne Coubrough when they were both working at the Depot in Edmonton; where she worked in the office, and Wayne was with the Air Force. Reta had a long and eventful life full of travel, career, and volunteerism. They married on December 5, 1959 and settled into married life in Edmonton. When Wayne was posted overseas, Reta went with him to live in Germany and France. They had two children, born while they were there, and were posted back to Canada in 1967. Reta taught Business School while in Summerside PEI. She was a school secretary while they were posted in Moosonee, Ontario, and worked at different levels of the Provincial Government when the family was posted to CFB Penhold and Blackfalds, once Wayne retired. She worked at the Alberta Motor Vehicles in Red Deer, then Alberta Social Services, and finally, Alberta Consumer and Corporate Affairs. After Reta retired, she kept busy volunteering with the Canadian Cancer Society, Relay for Life, Jail and Bail, Look Good Feel Better, Beta Sigma Phi, and the Royal Canadian Legion 212 in Sylvan Lake. Reta won many awards for her volunteer service, including the Gloria Aaron Award, Canadian Cancer Society, Dr. Dan McCharles Leadership Award, Canadian Cancer Society, Distinguished Service Award, Canadian Cancer Society, Community Service Committee Award, Canadian Cancer Society and a Lifetime Membership Award, the Royal Canadian Legion, to name a few. Reta volunteered in partnership with her husband, Wayne for many years at the Royal Canadian Legion 212 in Sylvan Lake, putting in long hours and many miles, commuting between Blackfalds and Sylvan Lake, and was a well-respected member of the Branch. Reta was always ready and willing to help others. Reta will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Cindy. She will also be sadly missed by her sister, Janet Miller, and her brothers-in-law, Russell (Irene) Coubrough, and Bob (Gloria) Wilde; and her sister-in-law, Cathy Nobbs, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews and dear friends. Reta was predeceased by her husband, Wayne; a son, Wade; her daughter by choice, Nola Neufeld; her parents, Jim and Jean Nobbs; and her brothers, Richard and Ron Nobbs. A Celebration of Reta’s Life will be held on Saturday, September 3, 2022 at the Royal Canadian Legion, 4615 – 50 Avenue, Sylvan Lake, Alberta from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. If desired, Memorial Donations in Reta’s honour may be made directly to the Alzheimer Society of Canada at www.alzheimer.ca, the Canadian Cancer Society at www.cancer.ca or to the Lacombe Health Trust at www.lacombehealthtrust.com.
