In Loving Memory of Balwant Singh Mann
July 15, 1938 – April 15, 2026
(As the rays of the sun merge into the sun and water merges into water, their light merges into the Light, and they become perfectly complete.)
It is with profound sorrow that the family of Balwant Singh Mann announces his passing on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, at the age of 87. A man of quiet strength, boundless warmth, and unwavering faith, Balwant lived a life defined by honest work, devotion to God, and a deep, enduring love for his family.
Born in the pre-independence era on July 15, 1938, in the village of Baho Yatri, Punjab, India, Balwant’s life spanned periods of immense historical and personal change. He valued education from an early age, completing his matriculation at Khalsa National Public High School in 1960 and pursuing post-secondary studies at Government Rajindra College in Bathinda in 1962. He carried this dedication into a long and distinguished career, serving as a Clerk and later Superintendent (GR-II) with the Punjab Government Canal Lining Department in Bathinda from November 1963 until his retirement in July 1996.
On March 4, 1965, he married his beloved wife, Satpal Kaur Maan. Together, they shared a beautiful and enduring partnership of 54 years, until her passing in 2019. Their life was marked by both great joy and profound sorrow. The tragic loss of his son at the young age of 40 left an indelible mark on Balwant’s heart. Yet, rather than allowing grief to harden him, it deepened his humility and strengthened his lifelong devotion to spirituality.
In his retirement years, Balwant’s discipline and faith became the cornerstone of his daily life. Rising at 2:30 a.m. each morning without fail, he would walk to the Gurdwara to meditate on the name of God and perform sewa (selfless service). His humility and gentle spirit were felt by all who worshipped alongside him.
Family remained the center of Balwant’s life. For decades, the multi-generational home in Bathinda was his anchor. It was there, during the later years of his career and throughout his retirement, that he formed a deep and foundational bond with his grandson, Gaganpreet, sharing closely in his upbringing.
Balwant remained remarkably independent and full of vitality well into his eighties. He shared a close bond with his devoted daughter, Surinderjit, and cherished his visits to her home—first in Red Deer and later in Edmonton. He enjoyed time with her husband and their two sons, filling those visits with outings, movies, and peaceful trips to the Gurdwara. Just last year, he experienced the joy of meeting his grandson’s newlywed wife, warmly welcoming her into the growing family he loved so deeply.
Following the heartbreaking losses of his son and wife, his loving daughter-in-law became a steadfast support in his daily life, first in India and later in Canada. After relocating permanently to Blackfalds, Alberta, in November 2020, Balwant became a cherished presence in his grandson’s home. He found immense joy in his great-grandchildren—twins born in 2021 and another child born in 2022—who loved spending time by his side.
A familiar and gentle presence in his Blackfalds neighborhood, Balwant remained active and enjoyed daily walks until the final year of his life. He could often be found outside, either walking or sitting in the sun, offering a warm and friendly wave to everyone who passed by.
In his final months, as age and illness slowed him, the love he had given throughout his life was returned to him in full. His daughter traveled frequently from Edmonton to care for him, while his daughter-in-law, grandson Gaganpreet, and granddaughter-in-law supported him with compassion and devotion. The family finds comfort in knowing that in his final moments, he was surrounded by love, with his granddaughter-in-law gently by his side.
Balwant Singh Mann leaves behind a legacy of resilience, spiritual devotion, and quiet kindness. He is lovingly remembered by his daughter and her family, his devoted daughter-in-law, his grandson Gaganpreet and his wife, and his cherished great-grandchildren, who will grow up hearing stories of his enduring grace.
He will be deeply missed, but his family finds comfort in knowing that his soul has merged with the Divine Light he meditated upon throughout his life.
