With heavy hearts the family of Henry John Niemeyer announce his passing on Sunday, July 19, 2026 at the Mountainview Seniors Care Center in Sundre, Alberta. Henry lived 87 full and happy years where he squeezed the most out of work, hobbies and family time. He was the second of eight children born to Katherine and Nomko Niemeyer on October 12, 1938 in Pincher Creek, Alberta. Henry left home at the age of fourteen to work in a sawmill but moved on to become a heavy equipment welder in Banff, Waterton and then Airdrie. It was when he was in Banff that he met his future wife, Shirley Ann Stumpf. They were married on January 13, 1962 in Olds, Alberta. They moved to Waterton and then Red Deer during the first five years of their marriage and welcomed 3 children; Charlene, Colin and Sheldon. Henry worked for McLevins Welding where he earned additional certification in Pressure B oilfield welding. This led the family to move to Olds in 1968 where they partnered with his brother Bill and purchased Otto Schmidts Welding and Blacksmithing business. It was renamed Niemeyer’s Brothers Welding and seven years later Niemeyer’s Oilfield and Industrial Supplies was opened. Henry, his wife Shirley and Bill worked tirelessly to achieve the quality of workmanship and service that they were known for over the years. Henry enjoyed many hobbies including hunting, fishing, ATV’s, horses and camping. He retired to the family cabin in Coalcamp where he was a much-loved member of the community. Henry is survived by his children: daughter Charlene Fraser; sons Colin (Lori) and Sheldon; four loving grandchildren Tyler, Sarah, Reagan and Jett; sister Dorothy (Laddie) Poritz, brother-in-law Allan Truit, brothers Robert, Bill (Helen), Gary, and sister Darlene Berry. Henry was predeceased by his wife Shirley Ann, his sister Evelyn and brother Ronald. A Celebration of Henry’s Life will be held on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at the Paterson Community Centre, 2101 – 27th Avenue, Bowden Alberta, with lunch to follow. If desired, donations in memory of Henry’s love of camping may be made to the Friends of the Eastern Slopes at PO Box 1441, Sundre, Alberta, T0M 1X0. The family is deeply thankful to Dr. Chris Chapman for the care, guidance, and kindness he provided to Henry and his family over the past few years.
