Mrs. Marjorie Elizabeth ‘Marg’ Groeneveld passed away at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre, Red Deer, Alberta on Thursday, January 29, 2026 at the age of 88 years. Marg was born to Jan and Meintje Datema on September 26, 1937 in Slagharen, Holland. She immigrated to Canada in 1951 along with her parents and siblings, George, Martin, Fenny, Mae, Shanny, John, Nelli, and Gerald. She met George Groeneveld while living in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. They were married on September 26, 1956. Eventually they moved to Penhold, Alberta where they raised their four children, John, George, Dan, and Elizabeth.
Marg’s joy in life was caring for her family, whether by cooking tasty meals, growing fresh food in her garden, canning jars of fruit, sewing, and driving to hockey or dance. She was involved in the Penhold Women’s Institute for many years, enjoying the fellowship and serving her community. Later in life she devoted much time caring for her aging mother. She was a wonderful grandmother to her seven grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. Marg had quiet faith and enjoyed being part of church life, attending Coffee Break and singing with the Songbirds. Marg was predeceased by her husband, George, her eldest son, John, her sister, Mae, and her brother, George. A Celebration of Marg’s Life was held at the First Christian Reformed Church, 16 McVicar Street, Red Deer, Alberta on Tuesday, February 3, 2026 at 1:30 p.m. The Celebration of Life will be Livestreamed through the First Christian Reformed Church website at https://www.firstcrcreddeer.ca/ . A Private Graveside Service will be held prior to the Celebration of Life. If desired, Memorial Donations in Marg’s honor may be made to World Renew at https://worldrenew.ca/.
