Mrs. Joyce Helen Pahl (nee Westerlund) has been relieved of all suffering and went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, November 1, 2024 at the age of 87 years. Joyce was the first born on July 8, 1937 to the union of the late Edward and Helen Westerlund in Wetaskiwin, Alberta. She was raised at the Crystal Springs Resort at Pigeon Lake. Joyce attended school at the Lakedell School in Westerose, Alberta. Wherever Joyce lived, her church family, and her faith was very important to her. Being a lifetime member of the Lutheran Church, she was involved in numerous committees, activities and bible studies within her churches and met many lifelong friends. Music was a big part of Joyce’s life from a very young age. Her father bought an old pump organ and Joyce learned to play it. Never having a lesson, Joyce did not learn to read music. Instead, she was blessed with the ability to play by ear. This gift was received by many that attended dances or had the pleasure of hearing her play the accordion, piano or organ. In her teen years, she played the accordion in many halls around Alberta for two Country Music Bands, The Corn Huskers and the Western Cherokees. The tunes she would play were always pleasing to the ear, so fulfilling to your heart and often so upbeat, you just could not help yourself but get up and dance. This music brought an unexpected reward as it was at a dance that Joyce met Don, her devoted husband of sixty-seven years. Together, they raised three children Randy, Darcy and Bonnie. The most treasured moments for Joyce were time spent with family and friends. She loved to host all occasions and ensured every detail was covered to perfection – food, decorations, the table setting, and activities for the kids, nothing would be overlooked. These get togethers always ended with a whole lot of music and singing. Joyce was so happy to become a grandma and cherished her grandchildren. They can all vouch for her delicious cinnamon buns and her extra special puffed wheat squares. She was honored and proud to attend their school events, sports, graduations and weddings. Being a grandma was great but to become a great grandma was even better. Joyce loved children and that was evident her entire life. She enjoyed being a Brownie leader, she was a playschool teacher and loved to share her strong faith with the children attending Vacation Bible School and Sunday School. Neighborhood children also knew it was the house to go to for a hug, a visit and maybe a treat or two. Over the years, other favorite times for Joyce were, collecting collectables, shopping, weekly card games with friends, being a member of the Happy Gang Choir, spending time in her flower gardens, redecorating her home, countless miles travelled in their motorhome, and preparing beautiful crafts to sell at local markets. She also had a natural talent for oil painting, and she may just hold the record for being Daniel O’Donnell’s biggest fan. One of many very endearing warmth’s of Joyce was she would greet you with a hug and you never left without a hug, and “thank you for visiting”. Joyce leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Don, her sons, Randy (Lori) Pahl, and Darcy Pahl, her daughter, Bonnie (Bill) Adler, her much loved sister, Vickie (Bud) Kuehn, her grandchildren, Samantha (James) Lee, Alexandria (Mitch) Boehm, Nathaniel (Charlene) Harrison, Mackenzie Harrison, Christopher (Brynna) Galasso, and Brittney (Josh) Deschambault; her great grandchildren, Declan, Leyla, Haven, Elijah, Henley, Ryah, and Brooks, and a very close special niece, Darla (Darrin) Penney. Joyce was predeceased by her sister and brother-in-law, Lorraine and Orest Kuhn. A Public Viewing was held at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, 18 Selkirk Blvd., Red Deer, Alberta on Friday November 8, 2024 at 12:00 p.m. one hour prior to the Funeral Service at 1:00 p.m. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed at www.parklandfuneralhome.com
