SLEMP, Ruby Ann
1936 – 2025
Ruby Ann Slemp passed away peacefully in her home on Sunday, September 28, 2025, at the age of 89 years. Ruby was born on Sunday, May 21, 1936, in Coronation, Alberta, and grew up in Fleet, Alberta, where she lived until she left to attend Henderson Business College in Calgary. In 1955, Ruby married Richard ‘Dick’ Slemp and after their first son, Richard, born in 1956, they moved from Fleet to Edmonton, where in 1958, their second son, Roland, was born. Dick’s job as a banker took them to various cities around Alberta, with them taking up permanent roots in Red Deer in 1967. Ruby worked various jobs in Red Deer including continuity writer at the CKRD, a family-owned music store – National Music, a school secretary at Grandview, a hostess at the Elks Club as well at the Capri, where she also worked in the accounting department. Ruby had many hobbies and interests over the years with a passion for listening to Dick and her boys play music. She also loved to watch her grandson, Erik, play hockey. Upon retirement, many summers were spent being “caretakers” at Richard’s acreage, which brought her much joy. Ruby is predeceased by her only sibling, Pat Charles, in 2024. Ruby is survived by her husband of 69 years, Dick; her sons, Richard and Roland (Iris); and grandson, Erick (Stephanie). She leaves to mourn nieces and nephews, and many cousins and lifelong friends who meant the world to her. Ruby will be remembered for her love of family and music and her zest of life; she will be missed by all that had the pleasure of knowing her. At Ruby’s request, a private graveside ceremony will be held at a late date. Cremation entrusted to Parkland Funeral Home and Crematorium, Red Deer, Alberta.
