NELSON, Madeleine
1936 – 2025
Mrs. Marie ‘Madeleine’ Nelson (Newans) passed away peacefully, with her family by her side, on Friday, April 18, 2025 at the age of 88 years. Mom was born on May 4, 1936, in Valmont, France, the only child of Emile ‘Nicolas’ and Marguerite Noël. Her early years were shaped by the challenges of World War II in occupied France. In 1957, she immigrated to rural Saskatchewan with her infant daughter, Debbie, after marrying a Canadian Air Force soldier. Debbie was soon joined by Donna, David, and Dianne, all born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. The family moved to Penhold, Alberta in 1963 and, a year later, relocated to Red Deer. Determined to support her children, Mom pursued her Canadian citizenship and attended Key Secretarial School to enhance her skills. In 1969, she married Henry, with whom she shared a life filled with love, woodworking, winemaking, gardening, beekeeping, and countless road trips. Following Henry’s passing in 2007, Mom embraced new challenges with resilience and curiosity. She learned to drive, maintained her home, and explored many new interests. A lifelong learner, she fully embraced technology – YouTube was her friend. Exceptionally intelligent, she even learned Spanish at the age of 80, adding it to the French, German, and English she already spoke. Mom had a wonderful silly side that brought joy to her ten grandchildren and her eight great grandchildren. Mom will be lovingly remembered by her daughters, Debbie (Doug) Neis, Donna (Lou) Valckx, and Dianne (Eddy) Carless; her grandchildren, Jennifer Neis, Devon (Mel) Neis, Aimée Valckx, Nadia Valckx (Wally), Tanner Newans (Jaclyn), Skylar Newans, Kayla Newans, Morgan Carless (Danelle), Justin Carless (Andrea), and Spencer Carless (Jessica); and her great grandchildren, Hailey Miller, Sadie Pennell, Asher, Emmett, and Braxten Newans, Nathan Carless, and Emmett and Sawyer Carless. Mom was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Henry, and her son, David. A Funeral Service will be held at Parkland Funeral Home, 6287 – 67 A Street (Taylor Drive), Red Deer on Sunday, May 4, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. For those unable to attend in person, the service will be livestreamed at the following link: https://www.parklandfuneralhome.com/live-stream.
