Mrs. Joyce Shupenia passed away peacefully on Monday, November 4, 2024, at the age of 88 years. Joyce lived at the Red Deer Hamlets during the past year and previously resided in Innisfail, Alberta for the past forty-three years, and Drumheller, Alberta for twenty-four years before that. She was born in Stonewall, Manitoba, just north of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Joyce spent much of her pre-school years with her grandmother and learned to speak Ukrainian. She was always helping at the farm. Joyce attended business college in Winnipeg and started working at the Komar Accordion School, first of all as the receptionist, then teaching accordion, winning competitions and developing the love of music. She married, Dan in 1957, enjoying sixty-five years of marriage. They moved to Stonewall where Joyce continued to give accordion lessons, do the books for the lumberyard, teach Sunday school at the local United Church, and still helped out at the farm. Moving to Drumheller in 1967, Joyce still taught accordion lessons, Sunday School, sang in the church choir, the Sweet Adelines and a Barbershop quartet. Volunteering in the schools, lead to a job as a teacher assistant for several years. Joyce also did the books for the John Howard Society. She was an avid band parent, known as “Mom” by all the band students! The family moved to Innisfail in 1982. Joyce was soon known by many as their Avon lady. She did the books for the Guardian ambulance company for several years, then later for Metcalfe Funeral Home before her retirement. No matter what formal job Joyce had, she was always the ultimate host. There was always a cup of tea, a cookie and an open door of welcome for every visitor. Joyce was a fantastic cook, seamstress, knitter, gardener, and loved travelling and camping. Above all, Joyce valued positivity, friends, and family. Joyce is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Karen, her son, Kevin (Kim), her “adopted daughter”, Annie Mae (Bill, Maggie and Evan), her brother, Ron, her daughter in law, Nicola, many cousins, nieces, nephews and a multitude of friends. She is predeceased by her husband, Daniel, her son, Ken, and son-in-law Timothy. The family extends their deep appreciation to friends who cared for Joyce, especially Jim and Janet Brown, the staff at The Hamlets and Red Deer Hospital; Unit 32, Reverend Tammy Allan and the Innisfail United Church. Joyce Shupenia will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew her.
