Mr. Marvin Schmidek of Leduc, Alberta passed away peacefully at Extendicare on Sunday, September 10th at the age of 87 to be with his Heavenly Father. Marvin was born on July 9, 1936 to his parents Leopold and Martha Schmidek on his family farm in Craig, Alberta along with his twin sister Marlene. They were the youngest children in the family. In 1961, Marvin married the love of his life, Doreen Plitt and had four children. He remained on the family farm until he moved his wife and children to Rocky Mountain House in 1977. His passion was farming and while he farmed, he also drove the school bus for 18 years. He started in the oil patch part time in 1976 to supplement the farm. In 1977 he became a full-time battery operator with Dekalb Petroleum and relocated to Rocky where they remained until 1989 and then moved to Red Deer. He retired from Dekalb (later named Apache) in 1996. Even after he retired, he always longed to farm and continued to help out at Kaun’s Seed Farm every harvest season.
In January 2021 they made the move to Leduc where they resided at Lifestyle Options, an assisted living facility. In October that year Marvin was transitioned to Extendicare as his health deteriorated and he remained there until his death. Marvin was very active in the Lutheran Church community, serving his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ wherever he lived.
He enjoyed playing sports as a young man and later as he got older, he still loved to watch them whether it was on tv or watching his kids and grandkids play. He always made time for his family and church community. He enjoyed fishing and camping with family and friends. He took pride in beautifying his yard and the neighbour’s yards that were lucky enough to live beside him.
The family would like to express their appreciation and gratitude to the staff of Extendicare in Leduc as they compassionately cared for their father. Marvin is lovingly remembered by his wife, Doreen of sixty two years; his children Lea Ann (Peter), Darren (Jody), Darcy (Michelle) and Michele (Dave); nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, Leopold and Martha Schmidek, his brothers, Gerald, Oscar (infant), Harold (Elsie); and his sisters Gertie (John), Ella (John), Edith (Marvin), and Marlene (Ralph). Also left to mourn are his sister-in-law, Lydia Schmidek, brother-in-laws Lorence (Mary) Plitt, Edwin (Adella) Plitt and Ken Plitt along with numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
