SCHLAG, Richard
1936 – 2025
With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Mr. James ‘Richard’ Schlag on March 22, 2025 at the age of 88 years. Richard was born in Trochu, Alberta on December 28, 1936 to Jacob and Helen Schlag. Richard was the eldest of four children. He lived his entire life in the Lousana District. When Richard was eight years old, his parents purchased the land that Richard would live on for the rest of his life. In 1963, he married the love of his life, Janet Buckland. They went on to build a meaningful life together that lasted sixty-two years. Together, they had four children, Allan (Tracy) Schlag, Marlene (Jason) Lazzari, Darlene Schlag, and Ivan (Aarone) Schlag; eleven grandchildren, Shannon (Cory MacIntosh) Schlag, Josh Paul, Jordan and Shaylee Schlag, Janelle (Brad) Greiner, Jena (Todd) Warren, Jeff (Sarah) Lazzari, Jacob, Ethan (Jenna St. Pierre) Brooklyn, and Addison Schlag; and nine great grandchildren, Tucker and Parker Paul, Porter Schlag, Jax, Kix, and Lex Greiner, Oliver, Archer, and Raelene Warren. Richard grew up using horses for transportation and to farm. As times changed, and steel replaced the horses, Richard’s love for them never wavered. He continued to raise horses, and always had a good team, and saddle horses around. Over his lifetime, Richard was an active member of the community. He was a founding member of the Delburne Harness Club, as well as an active member of the Delburne Light Horse Association for most of his life. He hosted weekly Cattle Pennings through the summer months. He especially enjoyed this, because he took great pride in watching all of the kids improve their horsemanship skills. Although Richard and Janet had a mixed farm, Richard was a rancher at heart. He loved the cows and enjoyed few things better than to watch baby calves run and play on the hills every spring. Although his kind smile and gentle demeanor will be greatly missed, his memory and love of life and his family will never be forgotten. A Celebration of Richard’s Life was held at the Lousana Community Hall, Lousana, Alberta on Monday, March 31, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. A Private Family Interment was also held.
