Dorothy Anne ‘Dottie’ Young of Red Deer passed away on Friday, July 3, 2026 at the age of 89 years.
Dottie was born on November 1, 1936 in Rose Prairie, British Columbia joining her brother, Robert and her sister, Mary on the family farm. She was a true farm girl to the end who loved all the baby animals, gardening, the rodeo, cowboys and a comfy pair of blue jeans.
She spent her years not just in Rose Prairie and Fort St. John, but lived in Whitehorse and finally, Red Deer, where she could be close to her sons and their families. She was forever proud of ‘her three sons’ and was broken hearted when Randy passed away in 2024.
Dottie cherished her time spent with good friends and family. Whether it be a road trip, a shared glass of wine or fresh raw oysters on the pier in Vancouver, she treasured those days. And of course she was always ‘well put together’. She loved her colourful, tailored clothing and was, without fail, fresh and fashionable and most definitely co-ordinated! Anywhere with sunshine was her favourite place to sit, warming her heart and her hands.
Dottie spent many years volunteering in her lifetime and was a part of making the North Peace Historical Society; the Fort St. John North Peace Museum what it is today. It still houses treasures from her mother’s time as the first Red Cross nurse/midwife in the North Peace region. In more recent years Dottie volunteered countless hours with the Red Deer Christmas Bureau Society. Numerous families were able to enjoy Christmas a bit more thanks to her and many others. Closer to home, friends and neighbours were often the recipients of cookies and muffins or squares, her wonderful baking, that she so generously delivered to their door.
We will all remember Dottie as an astute businesswoman, who owned and operated several businesses at different times in her life. Her business savvy was apparent along with her attention to detail and her efficiency and organizational skills were to be admired.
Dottie is survived by her two sons, Rocky (Marie) Snippa and Shane (Cora) Snippa; her two grandsons, Christopher Freeman and Joshua Snippa: two great grandsons, Hayden and Sidney; her sister, Mary (Tom) Mickey and sister-in-law, Gerry Ann Young. And of course many relatives and so many special friendships that meant the world to her.
Dottie was predeceased by her parents, Jim and Anne Young, her brother, Robert and her son, Randy.
A Come and Go Celebration of Dottie’s Life will be held at Parkland Funeral Home, 6287 – 67A Street, (Taylor Drive) Red Deer, Alberta on Friday, September 18, 2026 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
If desired, Memorial Donations may be made in memory of Dottie to either the Fort St. John Peace Museum at www.fsjmuseum.com or to the Red Deer Christmas Bureau Society at www.reddeerchristmasbureau.com.
When I come to the end of the road
And the sun has set for me
I want no rites in a gloom filled room
Why cry for a soul set free?
Miss me a little, but not too long
And not with your heads bowed low
Remember the love that we all shared
Miss me, But let me go.
This is a journey that we all must take
And each must go alone
It’s all a part of the Master’s plan
A step on the road to home.
When you are lonely and sick at heart
Go to the friends we know
Bury your sorrows in doing good deeds
Miss me – but let me go.
