William Edward Post
October 23rd, 1935 – March 20th, 2025
It is with deep sorrow and heartfelt remembrance that we announce the passing of William (Bill) Edward Post, who left us peacefully on Thursday, March 20th 2025 at the age of 89.
Bill was born on October 23, 1935, in Winnipeg, Manitoba; married Cynthia on September 6, 1958 [ they had known each other since they were 6 years old ] and welcomed son James in 1960, Don in 1962 and Susan in 1964
At the age of 17, Bill served as a Junior Assistant on the Geological Survey team in the Whiteshell Forest Reserve
He completed his BA at the University of Manitoba in 1960, and worked in Winnipeg for the YMCA until he was offered a transfer in 1965 to Calgary as Director of the YMCA. He continued in that role for 12 years before being offered a position with Calgary Hospital District 7, where he served as the Director of Human Resources from 1977 until his retirement in 1992
After retiring and relocating to Olds, he quickly immersed himself in that community
He started a private practice to assist people who had unexpectedly lost a job, helping them deal with the associated emotions, and providing guidance to assist in their transition into a new career
Bill and Cynthia were also both very involved with Olds First Baptist Church and in particular with the Joy Fellowship group.
Sadly, after 46 years of marriage, Cynthia passed away in 2004 after a long battle with Ovarian Cancer, followed by the passing of their eldest son James [ Jim] 6 weeks later, after a short battle with cancer
After Cynthia and Jim’s passing,
– Bill began to volunteer with Victim Services in Olds
– Victim Services works in conjunction with the RCMP, communicating and offering support to the survivors of incidents resulting in the loss of life, or other individuals who come to the attention of the RCMP and require support
– It was during this time that Bill met Betty Swanby, who was also volunteering with Victim Services
– As two compassionate individuals intimately familiar with significant loss, Bill and Betty were uniquely qualified to offer support from a place of understanding
– When Bill found out that Betty had lost her husband George in 2003 after 46 ½ years of marriage, he invited her to a grief group being held at First Baptist Church in Olds
– Their personal relationship grew during this time, and they subsequently married in 2006
Bill was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Willa Post, his brother Bob, his wife Cynthia and his eldest son James
He is survived by his son Don (Francis), his daughter Susan (Keith), as well as the children and grandchildren of James (Lila), Don and Susan.
Bill is also survived by his loving wife Betty, their mutual love and happiness obvious to all, Bill was also loved and respected by Betty’s children, Tracy (Rick) and Craig (Georgina), and their children.
Bill’s legacy is defined by his unwavering faith, love for his family and his deep appreciation for the simple pleasures in life. He was known for his kindness, his sense of humor, and his ability to make those around him feel at ease. Whether spending time with family, helping friends and neighbours, enjoying quiet moments at home and at the lake, or sharing a laugh and adventure with friends, his presence always a source of warmth.
He loved to work with wood, carving by hand or on his lathe, paddling a canoe or sailing his Laser sailboat and later the pontoon boat around Burnstick Lake, he also loved his motorcycle, skidoo and quad rides with friends and family in the area around Burnstick, always up for an adventure. In his later life he became a more voracious reader and spent a lot of his leisure time with his latest library find.
His love and spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him. May he rest in peace, reunited with Cynthia and James.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to the caring staff at Olds Hospital who supported Bill and to all those who shared in his life.
A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, March 28, 2025 at the First Baptist Church, 5005 – 53 Avenue, Olds, Alberta at 2:00 p.m.. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alberta Cancer Society [a cause close to his heart], a fitting tribute to his enduring legacy.
