The family of Robert Laszlo of Red Deer, Alberta is deeply saddened to announce his passing on Monday, September 7, 2026 at the age of 90 years. He was a beloved husband, dad, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, great uncle, papa, great papa, and friend. Robert was born December 29, 1935 in Istensegits Bukovina Romania to Anna and Zoltan Laszlo. Robert grew up in Hungary and fled to Canada in 1956 during the Hungarian Revolution. Robert travelled and worked in many places on his way to Canada. In the fifties, Robert was a boxer with many wins in Edmonton, Alberta. Robert made his way to Whitehorse, Yukon, where he met his wife Erna. They had one daughter, Cindy Laszlo. Robert got his Mechanic Licence while in Whitehorse and worked for White Pass. Together, Robert and Erna built their life around their daughter Cindy. Robert enjoyed fishing, boating, camping, skidooing, archery, playing soccer, hanging out with his friends and dancing with his wife. In the eighties, they moved their family to Penhold, Alberta. Robert would travel back to Dawson City to work in the gold mines to provide for his family when work was in short supply. In 1993, they moved to Red Deer and he worked as a mechanic until he was forced into early retirement due to an injury at work. In his later years, Robert enjoyed watching sports, hunting, fishing, shooting archery, quading, gardening, cooking, A&W coffee mornings with his wife (and to bring his grandkids hashbrowns) and spending time with his daughter and grandkids. Robert had a life full of many experiences some only read about in books, like flying a helicopter, crashing, and walking away to tell the tale. Robert will be forever remembered with love by his daughter, Cindy Laszlo (Joe Butryn), his grandkids, Tayler Dearden, Nikita Dearden, Keisha Boutilier, and his great grandson, Mathius. He will also be deeply missed by his sisters and their families, Margareta; Robi, Gabriella, and Antol: Erzsebet; Lotsi and Renata: Terezia; Peter and Rita: his sister-in-law, Velda and their family, as well as many friends that he touched along the way. Robert was predeceased by his loving wife, Erna, just four months prior to his passing. He is also predeceased by his parents, Anna and Zoltan, his three brothers, Istavan, Jozsef, and Adolf. A Celebration of Robert and Erna’s lives will be held at the Mountview Hall, 4316 – 32 Street, Red Deer, Alberta on Sunday, September 27, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. If desired, Memorial Donations in Robert’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Alberta at https://alzheimer.ca/ab/en.
