Mrs. Shirley Claire Mappin, (nee Nemetz) beloved wife of the late William ‘Bill’ Mappin, passed away peacefully at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre on Thursday, April 10, 2025 at the age of 89 years. Shirley was born in Big Valley, Alberta on October 30, 1935, to Charlie and Ada Nemetz. She was never bored growing up as she was always surrounded by her siblings, Josephine, David, Eunice, May, Carl, Larry, Ruth, Art, and Sharon. After finishing school, Shirley worked at Sunwapta Falls Resort. Marilyn Monroe was filming nearby, and the film crew stopped in for lunch. Shirley got Marilyn’s autograph on a serviette. How cool is that! On January 21, 1954, Shirley married William ‘Bill’ Mappin and to this union four sons were born, Mike, Bruce, Greg, and Rick. Shirley was a farm girl through and through. She worked alongside her husband at their farm north of Byemoor from sun-up to sun-down. Then, when all the work was done, she still had time to grow wonderful flowers for the many rock gardens she created throughout their yard. Shirley was known for her love of collecting and refinishing antiques. You could find her bidding against antique dealers and giving them a run for their money at farm sales across Central Alberta. She was also a very talented artist. The family has many painted mementos to cherish. Shirley was also commissioned to design the County of Stettler logo. It was used for many years on trucks, equipment, and signs. Shirley and Bill moved to Stettler in 2017 and sold the farm in 2018. Shirley was a wonderful caregiver for Bill as his health declined with Alzheimer’s. These past few years, Shirley was afflicted with arthritis which made it hard for her to get around. But she still managed to drive across town to catch up with her brother, sister, and sisters-in-law over a coffee or lunch. The Nemetz family was everything to her. Shirley will be lovingly remembered by her sons, Mike (Judy), Bruce (Valerie), Greg (Doreen), and Rick (Christy); her grandchildren, Kyle (Tacy), Cass (Chelsea), Ty (Kolby), Charlee, Bobbie (Devon), TJ and Jason; and her great grandchildren, Kolt, Brooks, Peyton, and Walker; as well as her, siblings, May, Larry, Ruth, and Sharon. Shirley was predeceased by her loving husband, William ‘Bill’ in 2020; her siblings, Josephine, David, Eunice, Carl, and Art; her brothers-in-law, Jim and Ed; and her nephews, Dean, Ted and Bryan. A Private Family Service will be held. If desired, Memorial Donations in Shirley’s honor may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice. Cremation entrusted to Parkland Funeral Home and Crematorium, Red Deer, Alberta. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed at www.parklandfuneralhome.com
