It is with great sorrow that the family of Mrs. Jean Delores Morton (nee Blackbird), announce her passing on Monday, July 29, 2024 at Sunset Manor, Innisfail, Alberta, at the age of 89 years. Jean has fought a long hard battle after she had a stroke on August 21, 2013.
Jean Delores Morton was born on the Keeseekoowenin Ojibway First Nation, near Elphinstone, Manitoba on March 14, 1935. Jean was the second child of Jessie and Harry Blackbird. She had the most beautiful cursive handwriting that was learned at the Birtle Residential School. She didn’t dwell on her limited grade eight education, she believed in getting on with life, raising strong independent children who she was very proud of. Jean married John M. Morton on October 22,1953 and raised six children. Jean’s life as a farmer’s wife was full of “fixing” stuff with whatever was available, cooking and canning, as well as hauling grain when required, but she never went into town without having her hair nicely styled, lipstick on and nails never without polish! Jean was known to have a big bright smile that was admired and commented on by many people. She was also known to have a good sense of humour, especially after raising six children on a farm pretty much on her own, as her husband was busy farming! She loved her doggies and loved watching wildlife.
Jean will be lovingly remembered by her children, Joann Fulcher (Graham), Chrissie Morton, Arlene Morton (Gary Davidson), Richard Morton (Linda), John C. Morton, and Lisa Morton (John Byers). She will also be deeply missed by her five grandchildren, Tara Kirkpatrick, Shauna Kirkpatrick, Nichole Harrison (Troy), Jonathan Morton and Andrea Bickerstaff (Adam), as well as her five great grandchildren, Zachery and Brooklyn Harrison and Drake, Teia, and Soren Bickerstaff. She also leaves behind her siblings, Betty Hogg, Doris Gray, Carol Lennox and Harry Blackbird, who will miss their older sister greatly. Jean was predeceased by her husband, John Morton of forty-four years, and her siblings, Daniel Blackbird, Joseph Blackbird and Bernice Blackbird. A Private Family Interment will be held in Manitoba.
