DENHAAN, Simon
1934 – 2025
On Thursday, May 8, 2025, Mr. Simon ‘Sam’ Adrianus Denhaan was taken to his eternal home at the age of 90 years. Sam was born in The Hague, Netherlands and immigrated with his family to Canada in 1950. He spent his teenage years in Ontario. As an adult, he moved to Calgary, where he married Bonnie in 1959, and where they raised their children. Sam had a lifelong career in construction, working as a Superintendent and Project Manager of major projects in Alberta and Ontario. He later lived in Yellowknife and Hay River, Northwest Territories, where he worked with the Territorial Government Department of Public Works on projects in communities across the North. While there, he was an active member of the Civilian Air Search and Rescue Association. Sam was a long-standing member of the United Church of Canada. He had a passion for Humanitarian Service and Citizenship, lived through community involvement. After retiring to Red Deer in 1997, Sam volunteered in leadership for Habitat for Humanity, Friends of Medicare, the Central Alberta Council on Aging and the Central Alberta Poverty Reduction Alliance. Sam was a prolific and expert gardener, known for creating abundant flower and vegetable plots wherever he lived. He took great pleasure in providing fresh produce for the Red Deer Food Bank. Sam is mourned and deeply missed by his beloved wife of sixty-six years, Bonnie. Also grieving and celebrating Sam are his children, Christina (Tadeusz) and Joel (Shelley); his grandchildren, Eric (Gabrielle), Naomi (Sean), and Joy (Eamon); his sister, and brothers, and his Netherlands family. The family wishes to thank Units 22 and 32 at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre, as well as the Red Deer Hospice, for their caring and dedicated support in these last weeks.
