On Wednesday, August 12, 2026, Catherine ‘Betty’ Elizabeth Huston (nee Sample) passed away in Red Deer, Alberta, surrounded by family at the age of 93 years. Mom was born on Monday, July 17, 1933, to parents William and Lola (nee Brown) Sample near Richmond, Ontario. Mom grew up on a farm with five brothers; Gordon, Dave, Garnet, Bob and Bill. She was surrounded by the love of grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins and friends. After graduating high school, she worked for several years in Ottawa when she decided to visit her brother Dave, who was homesteading near Watino, Alberta. She loved it so much she came back to stay, working in a newspaper office in Dawson Creek, British Columbia. It was there she met and married her best friend and the love of her life, Donald ‘Don’ Elton Huston. They had two sons, Terry and Rob, and moved back to the Great Bend, North of Delburne, Alberta, where Dad had grown up. They purchased a farm and completed their family when Karen was born. Mom and Dad happily farmed together and when they retired took their fifth wheel and happily travelled together. Mom loved to garden and had a huge vegetable garden. She was a fantastic baker and cook. Dad loved her fresh baked bread. She could make a flapper pie that was out of this world! Among her grandchildren’s favorites were apple pie, lemon meringue, and all kinds of cookies. Mom loved babies and cuddled and loved each of her grandchildren and great grandchildren as they came along. Mom was always a kind, caring, loving, and thoughtful person who will be so missed by us all. Mom leaves to mourn her loving husband Don of 68 years; her sons, Terry (Jadene) Huston and Rob (Kathy) Huston; her daughter, Karen Richardson; as well as twelve grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren. She leaves one brother, Bill Sample of Richmond, Ontario; and numerous nieces and nephews. A special thank you to the staff of Taylor View Towers who cared for Mom. You are an amazing bunch, and Mom had nothing but good things to say about you. A special thank you also to Red Deer EMS as well as the Red Deer Hospital Emergency staff. At Mom’s request there will be no funeral. A private burial will be held in Mom’s honour at the Great Bend Cemetery. Mom supported many charities; her favorite being the Central Alberta Pregnancy Care Centre. Please feel free to support the care of babies in honour of Mom. Cremations entrusted to Parkland Funeral Home and Crematorium (Red Deer). Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed at www.parklandfuneralhome.com.
