Mrs. Gretta Mae Mathers (nee Greenway) passed away, with her family by her side, on Tuesday, May 23, 2023 at the age of 91 years. Gretta was born on February 7, 1932 at Hanna, Alberta to Ralph and Nellie Greenway, and was raised on the family farm at Netherby, Alberta. She met and married the love of her life, Floyd Mathers. They were only two months short of celebrating their sixtieth Wedding Anniversary when he passed away. They raised their family at Pollockville, Alberta, and there are many fond memories of great family times. Gretta had a very deep love for her family, and adored children. She taught kindergarten at Cessford, and when she and Floyd moved to Drumheller, she babysat children in their home. Gretta and Floyd retired to Eckville, and later moved to Red Deer. She was currently living in Victoria Park Senior’s Home, where she had made many wonderful friends. Gretta’s other interests were gardening and knitting. She was an avid sports fan and didn’t miss many curling, Oilers or Blue Jay games on TV. Gretta will be lovingly remembered by her children, Brenda (Wayne) Albrecht of Wimborne, Alberta, Shirley (Ken) Mashon of Drayton Valley, Alberta, Doug (Brenda) Mathers of Red Deer, Alberta and David Mathers, also of Red Deer, her seven grandchildren, Kirk Mathers, Clay (Mandy) Mathers, Kyle (Paige) Mathers, Jaime (John) Rasmussen, Shane (Tasha) Albrecht, Landon (Ashley) Mashon, and Remie (Becks) DeFoor and her eighteen great grandchildren. Gretta was predeceased by her husband, Floyd Mathers, her parents and her siblings, Norman Greenway, Dennis Greenway, and Joan Veres. A Celebration of Gretta’s Life was held at Parkland Funeral Home, 6287 – 67 A Street (Taylor Drive), Red Deer, Alberta on Friday, June 2, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. If desired, Memorial Donations in Gretta’s honor may be made directly to the Red Deer Hospice Society at www.reddeerhospice.com. Cremation entrusted to Parkland Funeral Home and Crematorium, Red Deer, Alberta. Interment will be held at the Netherby Cemetery, where she was raised.
