With heavy hearts the family of Melvin Glick Stoltzfus of Sundre, Alberta, announce his passing on Monday, September 21, 2026 at the age of 94 years. Melvin was born in Morgantown, Pennsylvania on March 16, 1932. He was the son of Job and Mary Glick Stoltzfus and the remaining survivor of five siblings. He grew up on a dairy farm which developed his love for dairy cows. As a young man he attended Penn State and took the milk testing course and then he travelled around Western Pennsylvania as a milk tester for two years. In April 1959, Melvin married Nancy Yoder of Bellville, PA. They had a dairy farm in Chester County, PA for eleven years. In those eleven years five children were born. In 1970 they sold their dairy cows, packed up their family in a Plymouth station wagon and came to Three Hills, AB where Melvin took two years of Bible School at Prairie Bible Institute. While in Three Hills two daughters were born. Melvin then became the manager of the Prairie Farm under director Mr. Gene Imbach. In 1984, after fourteen years at Prairie, we moved to the James River area where he ‘relief milked’ for other farmers and he eventually was able to start his own dairy. With the help of family, he dairied until 2010. Melvin loved to play baseball, hockey and coach his sons hockey teams. He was up at 4:00 am milking cows and he enjoyed making hay. He enjoyed the simple things of life which always included spending a lot of time with family. There were many adventures in the mountains on horseback with family, relatives, and friends. Hunting, fishing and hiking to the tallest peak to see what was on the other side were highlights for him.
In his latter years, he enjoyed watching sports and he was an avid reader. Melvin had a strong faith in God. His relationship with Jesus was a priority in everyday life. He was a kind man who was always willing to help others. Melvin is survived by his wife Nancy of 67 years, children; Melvin Lamar, Wendell (Leanne), Rena Wengerd (Kevin), Loren (Seana), Joy Schochenmaier (Allan), and Melody Neufeld (Nathan). He had ten grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by his parents and five siblings and his daughter Wilma Marie.
We will always miss his great sense of humor and steadfast, loving presence in our lives. A Celebration of Life was held at Garrington Community Church, 3424 Alberta 587 West, Red Deer County, AB, on Saturday, October 3, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. Donations in Melvin’s memory may be made to the Sundre Hospital Futures Fund at www.sundrehospitalfutures.ca.
