Diane Doreen Prodanuk (nee Marzek) passed away on Thursday, November 2, 2023 in Red Deer, Alberta at the age of 91 years.
Diane was born in Swift Current, Saskatchewan on May 26, 1932 to Stephen and Delma Marzek.
Growing up as an only child, Diane has fond memories of friends gathering at their home in
Swift Current, singing together while her mom, Delma, played piano. Her childhood memories
involve fishing and swimming at weekend picnics with her mom and dad and many friends at
local lakes. She also loved visiting the Marzek family farm in Dysart, Saskatchewan where she
could gather with aunts, uncles and cousins.
After graduating from high school, Diane enrolled in a business course which led to her first job
with the John Deere Plow Company in Swift Current, where she met John Prodanuk. John and
Diane eventually transferred to the head office in Regina, where they married in 1956 and
made their home.
In 1964, John and Diane moved their family to Yorkton, Saskatchewan for a few years, then
back again to Regina, where they settled and lived in their family home for 45 years.
Every summer was spent at the family cottage at Madge Lake, Saskatchewan, where Diane and
John and their four children spent many sunny days water-skiing, swimming, canoeing and
gathering around a night-time bonfire, sharing stories and songs with friends.
Diane had a bit of an adventuresome spirit and introduced a new family tradition when she
planned the first family ski trip over Christmas to Jasper. This trip was the impetus for more
family trips to the mountains in Alberta and BC for downhill skiing and good times spent
together.
Diane stayed at home raising the children when they were young, and when all four children
were in school, Diane returned to work, first as a lab technician at the Saskatchewan Provincial
Lab then later as a teacher aide at Central Collegiate High School, and at F.W. Johnson
Collegiate, both in Regina. She loved working in the library at both schools, assisting students
and teachers. She worked with the Regina school board for 17 years, retiring in 1996, when
John also retired.
During retirement, Diane and John spent time cross-country skiing with their close friends at
Madge Lake and Canmore, Alberta. They also enjoyed traveling to Asia, New York, Alaska, Maui,
Arizona, Cape Breton Island and Victoria.
Diane’s kind warmth and strong family values were the foundation and her legacy for raising a
happy and loving family. Family dinners and gatherings were always filled with love, laughter
and a deep bond that has persisted over years and miles of separation from one another. John
and Diane had a strong and lasting love and marriage, setting a beautiful example for their
children to follow.
Diane is survived by her children, Kelly (Maxine), Melanie Morstad (Kelly), Darryl (Diane), Lara
Shortall (Peter), her grandchildren Michael and Alexandra Prodanuk, Luke and Nolan Morstad,
Steven (Erin) Prodanuk and Samantha McNabb (Owen), Jonah and Cole Shortall, and great-
grandchildren Easton, Nash and Brooks Prodanuk. Diane’s husband of 64 years, John, passed
away in 2020.
The family would like to thank the staff at Revera Inglewood in Red Deer for their loving care of
Diane.
