LINDQUIST, Doreen Elizabeth
1931 – 2025
It is with sad hearts that we announce the passing of Mrs. Doreen Elizabeth Lindquist, with her husband, Axel by her side, at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, at the age of 93 years. Doreen was born to Reuben and Florence Olson in Spraque, Manitoba, the second child of four. She grew up on a farm north of Spraque, learning hard work and life skills.
Doreen met Axel in High School and married the love of her life on July 10, 1954, they were married almost 71 years. They had three daughters. Gaylene Weselowski (Kerry), children, Sherrie (Vinnie Kropodra) and Erica (Andy Trethart). Karla Gerow (Kevin) children, Dennis (Gabriela), Doug (Charolette) and Devon (Nancy), and Kristi Douglas (Don) children, Jenna and Karli Bayne and stepchildren, Marshall (Megan) and Sarah (Levi Iwaasa) Douglas. Doreen was blessed with fourteen great grandchildren and six step great grandchildren;

Doreen became a teacher after putting herself through normal school. She lived for a brief time in Atikokan, Ontario, with Axel and her young family, helping Axel build their first home. The family moved to Thompson, Manitoba in 1961, and Doreen opened the first kindergarten in 1962 in their home, and later, moved the class to the United Church for six years, and then finally got the kindergarten into the Mystery Lake School Division. She taught kindergarten for a few more years and then moved up to grade six, seven, and eight, and retired after 25 years with the School District. Over the years, she slowly worked on her degree in education with the support of her husband and family. Doreen helped Axel build the family cabin at Paint Lake which we all enjoyed for many years with family and friends. Retirement was spent at the lake enjoying fishing, canoeing and nature with her favorite guy, Axel!. Doreen was very active with St. John’s United Church over her 62 years in Thompson, as trustee Board chair, worship, special events, fundraising committees and worked as Presbytery representative for 19 years. Doreen was involved with starting and creating the Heritage North Museum, The Northern Spirit Manor, an avid environmentalist and received the Aurora award for the work with the museum and the Queen’s Jubilee Medal for community volunteering.
Doreen will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Axel; her three daughters, Gaylene, Karla and Kristi; her sister, Delphie Norberg; her sister-in-law’s, Dorothy Olson and Gert Olson.
