With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Mr. Allan Watson ‘Stew’ Stewart, at the Red Deer Hospice, on Sunday, November 10, 2024 at the age of 92 years. Stew was born in Red Deer. His parents Allan and Christina Stewart (nee Watson) raised Watson and his sister, Joan Secombe (nee Stewart) who now lives in Australia, with her family. He shared sixty-four years of marriage with his beloved wife, Bette Stewart (nee Huget) who passed away in March of last year. Watson, affectionately known as ‘Stew’, and Bette spent their entire lives in this community building a legacy of warmth, humor, and kindness that touched everyone fortunate enough to know them. Stew’s legacy lives on in his family, who will forever cherish his memory. He was a steadfast source of strength, humor, and wisdom for his family, always ready with a twinkle in his eye, a well-timed joke, or an unforgettable story. Stew spent his accounting career at the Red Deer Bottling Company and Uncle Ben’s, where he worked until his retirement. He also spent many years in the 78th Field Battery, ending his career as a Major. Though he excelled in his professions, his greatest joys were found beyond the office, planning vacations with his family and going out west with the Mountain Men, a group of friends he valued and shared his gift of storytelling with. An avid gardener with a green thumb, Stew loved to see things grow. He also loved working with his hands, crafting creations for his loved ones, especially for his granddaughters, who were the light of his life. Stew had a gift for connecting with people. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Though our hearts are heavy with his loss, we are grateful for the memories he gave us, the lessons he taught us, and the love he shared so freely. Stew will be lovingly remembered by his loving daughter, Tracie Stewart-O’Brien; his adored granddaughters, Krista O’Brien and Robyn (Trevor) O’Brien McNeely; and his precious great grandchildren, Marigold Jane and his namesake, Jamie Watson. An Interment for Bette and Stew will be held in the spring, details to follow. In lieu of flowers, if desired, Memorial Donations in Stew’s honor may be made directly to the Red Deer Hospice Society at www.reddeerhospice.com.
