Dr. Nick Hussar of London, Ontario passed away peacefully on August 25, 2023 at the age of 92 years. Nick was the beloved partner of Marie Nolan and much-loved son of the late Simon and Helen Hussar. Nick was born on July 17, 1931 in the Wayne Alberta Hospital with Dr. Tolmy as the attending physician. In 1937, he and his parents, Simon and Helen Hussar, left Wayne for a small acreage near Nacmine, Alberta, where Nick started school. The family later moved to a farm two miles south of Delburne, Alberta. Nick then attended Delburne Composite School. In 1945 the family moved one last time to farm a section of land near Innisfail, Alberta. Nick went to Niobe country school to grade ten and then attended Innisfail High School. He also attended a winter session in Red Deer Composite and then in 1952, he attended the University of Alberta, Agriculture, where he received his B.Sc, Agriculture in May 1956. Nick continued at the University of Alberta’s Department of Animal Science from 1956 to 1958 and worked on the study of feeding Rapeseed meal to hogs, dairy and beef. He received his M.Sc in Animal Nutrition in 1958. In 1959 he furthered his studies at the University of Saskatchewan with Dr. Milton Bell in the Department of Animal Science and in April 1965 he graduated with a PhD degree. After completing his education Nick was hired by Miracle Feeds and worked in their offices in Winnipeg, Edmonton, Montreal then in London, Ontario. In Montreal he became the Director of Nutrition. He, along with Dr. R. A. Costain, set up the Canadian Feed Manufactures’ Association Nutrition Council in 1976. He travelled to Spain, Israel, and Europe promoting rapeseed meal as a livestock feed. Nick continued as the Feed Nutritionist for Miracle Feeds Division following the Canadian merger of Furst-McNess and Miracle Feeds in 1992. He retired in 1999 and continued to reside in London, Ontario. Nick was well liked and highly respected by his colleagues throughout his work career. A Public Visitation will be held at Heartland Funeral Services Chapel, Innisfail, Alberta on Wednesday, September 6, 2023 from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. with a Graveside Service to follow at the Innisfail Cemetery.
