1930 ~ Mr. Glenn Goudie Mainland ~ 2023 "Glenn’s health declined in the last couple of years, but like the rest of his life, he approached each challenge with determination and pushed on until the very end when he no longer had any reserve left to draw on."

Mr. Glenn Goudie Mainland left us peacefully on Wednesday, December 13, 2023, at his home at Raven, Alberta, with his family by his side at the age of 93 years.
Glenn was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on February 8, 1930. He was the son of Malcolm Smythe Mainland and Jemima Cecilia Goudie (Armonie), and younger brother to his sister, Ruth Sinclair. He lived in several countries during his childhood, including Scotland; Kirkuk, Iraq; Haifa and Capetown. While attending school in these places he made several lifelong friends and was even home schooled for a time while living in Iraq.
Glenn graduated from the University of Glasgow in 1953 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering and moved to Canada. He worked for Imperial Oil in Calgary, Alberta for thirty-two plus years, with lead positions in many ventures including the Cold Lake project; Kearl Lake project; Beaufort Sea project and several other managerial positions. Glenn took early retirement in 1986 and bought the farm as a weekend retreat. He then moved on to his true calling, farming. Here Glenn bred and raised purebred Charolais cattle for several years before switching to grazers in his latter years. His true passion was woodworking and he thoroughly enjoyed spending hours on end creating beautiful wood treasures for his family and to sell at the Bird Man store in Caroline, Alberta. Glenn was an active member of the Esso Alumni woodworking group and enjoyed many gatherings and discussions with all of them. When things needed repairing or replacing, he could be found scouring the internet for solutions and parts, and it was very common to have Amazon packages shipped weekly. He was also an active member and supporter of the Raven and surrounding area communities, and rarely missed his Saturday night prime rib dinner at the Tivoli Gardens in Spruceview, Alberta.
Glenn sat as a board member for several organizations, he was the Chair of the Spruceview Co-op, and also held two short manager roles as the Chair of the Gray Wooded Forage Association, the Rocky Riparian and the Clearwater Conservation.
Glenn’s health declined in the last couple of years, but like the rest of his life, he approached each challenge with determination and pushed on until the very end when he no longer had any reserve left to draw on.
Glenn will be lovingly remembered by his daughter, Margaret (Ralph) and grandchildren, Braden, Jordan and Taylor, his daughter, Sheena (Mike), his son, Andrew (Lori) and granddaughter, Rhiannon, his daughter, Rona (Steve) and grandchildren, Malcolm, Kirsten, and Keegan, his stepdaughter, Shauna (Mike), and his nine great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister, Ruth, and his second wife, Elaine.
A Private Family Graveside Service was held at the Raven Cemetery, Raven, Alberta. A Celebration of Glenn’s Life will take place in the Springtime of 2024, details will be available at a later date.
