It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Wilfred (Wilf) Werner Weber, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend who passed away peacefully on Monday, May 11, 2026, at the age of 97.
Wilf’s father Gustav Weber immigrated to Canada from Austria. His mother Emma (Thomas) Weber was born in Josephburg, Alberta. Gustav and Emma were married in Josephburg and raised a family of eight children. The family moved around Alberta, living in Bolton, Bloomsbury, Camp Creek, Josephburg, Edmonton and Fort Saskatchewan.
Wilf was born in 1929 and raised in Josephburg, a little hamlet east of Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. He was educated at the two-room Josephburg School where grades one through twelve were taught.
Wilf started his career in 1945 at the age of 16 employed at Hoffart Lath and Plaster in Edmonton. From there he worked at Canada Packers in Edmonton (1946); Mannic in Dawson Creek building the Hart Highway (1946); and Northern Construction in Yellowknife, putting in the sewer and water systems (1948-49).
In 1950 he moved to Redwater, Alberta. The oil boom was at its peak and he spent 10 years working for Imperial Pipeline in the oil fields. His wife Mary Ambrosi also came to Redwater in the early 1950’s to visit her brother Andy. She got a job in the local hardware store and never returned to live in B.C. Wilf and Mary Weber were married in July of 1952. They spent the early years of their marriage relocating as work dictated. In 1960, Wilf started working for Alberta Gas Trunk Line (AGTL) and the family moved to Oyen, Alberta. In the fall of 1961, they relocated to Carstairs, Alberta where they raised their three children (Wayne, Glenn, and Wilma). Wilf retired after 31 years with AGTL. The company changed ownership and names over the years (NOVA,
TransCanada Pipelines and currently is known as TC Energy). Wilf and Mary resided in their
Carstairs home for over 61 years.
Wilf loved to do carpentry projects and did odd carpentry jobs around town. He often received compliments on his finished carpentry work. Wilf and Mary both loved the sport of curling and when not on the ice, helped out with events. In 1964, Wilf and Mary became involved with the local Boy Scout and Girl Guide organization, respectfully, and enjoyed being involved with many
Boy Scout and Girl Guide camping trips out west near the Dog Pound and Little Red Deer Rivers. A new scout hall was built in 1971 and was named the “Weber Scout Hall” in honor of Wilf and Mary’s service. Wilf and Mary also helped start up the Carstairs Cross-country ski club. They joined the Carstairs Half Century club (for seniors) where Wilf was an active member on the board of directors. In 2002 they rented the hall to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.
The family enjoyed spending time together camping and fishing. Even after the children left home, Mary and Wilf continued to go on camping and fishing trips which included locations in northern Alberta and Saskatchewan. They also enjoyed ice fishing and Wilf independently tried his hand at sub-ice net fishing as well. Summer vacations were usually spent heading to the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia to visit Mary’s relatives (Kelowna, Winfield, Armstrong, Kamloops). During their retirement years they travelled to the United States to spend time with their son Glenn and daughter-in-law Gloria in California as well as took trips to Florida, Nevada, and Arizona.
Wilf and Mary relocated to the Carstairs Chinook Winds Lodge in 2009. Mary was relocated to the Bethany Long Term Care facility in Cochrane, Alberta in 2021 and Wilf was transferred to the same Bethany facility in 2023.
Wilf was predeceased by his loving wife Mary in May of 2024 after 71 years of marriage; his parents Gustav and Emma Weber; brother Gustav Jr and wife Phyllis; his brother Emmanuel; sister Esther Lechelt; brother-in-law Elmer Nilson; brother-in-law Bill Bartee; as well as other loving aunts, uncles, and extended family.
Wilf is survived by his son Wayne Weber; son Glenn (Gloria) Weber; daughter Wilma (Michael) Sannino and their sons Marcus and Maximus; his brother Daniel (Maryann) Weber; his sisters Evelyn Nilson, Eva Bartee, and Pearl Hall; brother-in-law Art Lechelt; and other extended family members and close personal friends.
According to Wilf’s wishes, a private family service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to STARS Donations: 1441 Aviation Park NE, Box 570, Calgary, Alberta T2K 8M7. Please visit their website for further information: https://stars.ca/get-involved/ways-to-donate/
