Norma Lorraine Clark passed away at AgeCare Bow Crest in Calgary on Tuesday, June 3, 2025. She was 96 years old. Norma was born on August 19, 1928, the daughter of Catherine (Honey) and Jim Girling. She was raised with her two younger brothers Bus and Ken in Calgary and Kingston, returning to Calgary after WWII.
Norma was raised on the north hill, above the Bow River in Calgary where she met her soon to be husband Tom Clark. Norma graduated from Western Canada High School. Norma and Tom were married on June 4, 1949.
Norma gave birth to five children – David (Ann), Bob (Patricia), Tom (Wendy), Sue (Darcy), Linus (Shari).
To keep this large family busy land was bought and cabins were built and sold as Norma and Tom moved around Calgary. Harvey Hts, Coal Camp, Chestermere Lake, all giving them the experience needed to finally settle into their year-round cabin at the north end of Sylvan Lake in the Breakers subdivision where they bought a lot in 1967. Sylvan Lake became home away from home as the family grew up.
To keep 5 children in order Norma became a consummate organizer. Norma & Tom became founding members of the Calgary Winter Club. Norma put her organizational skills to good use, working with the Calgary Winter Club Sea Lions swim club, coaching the Winter Club synchronized swimming team, teaching swimming, and producing fashion shows for the Winter Club.
At Sylvan Lake Norma organized beach swim lessons, regattas and beach parties.
Norma and Tom tried their first retirement at Sylvan Lake. They then moved back to Calgary and became tour guides spending years guiding bus tours and cruise tours all over the world. Once again, all those skills came to good use.
After these adventures they bought a trailer and spent many winters in Yuma. Norma and Tom moved to Olds in 1997 where they lived until Tom’s passing in Feb 2009. She continued to live in Olds until health forced her to move back to Calgary. In Olds Norma attended Red Hat parties, sang in the choir and spent her time crocheting and reading.
For all her interests Norma was first a Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother. Her main love and concerns were always her large extended family.
Norma had 13 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Tom, her brother Ken and her great-grandson Austin. She attended 41 yearly family camping trips held all over Alberta and B.C., events she looked forward to all year every year where she could meet with her large extended family.
The family would like to thank the staff of AgeCare Bow Crest . We thank the staff for their care and kindness to Norma and her family.
