It is with great sadness that the family of Mrs. Joyce Ferguson (nee Calkins) announce her passing on Sunday, September 6, 2026, at the age of 98 years. Joyce was born on Tuesday, February 7, 1928, to parents Goldie and Louis Calkins, and raised above her father’s butcher shop. She was a lifeguard during the summers at Gull Lake and set a milestone to swim across the lake. Joyce received her education in Lacombe, then she took on her young family, and relocated to the Yukon where she resided for a time. Upon returning to Edmonton with her young family, she started to work as an Admin Assistant at Rosslyn Elementary School. She loved her job and made many friends. Sports was her thing, watching or participating in golf, bowling, football (Edmonton Eskimos), hockey (Edmonton Oilers), baseball (Blue Jays), and curling. She loved to place wagers with the family on who would win the game. She tried to never miss game; mealtimes would be hurried so she could watch the game. Her heart was so full of love for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and her many friends she made along the way. Joyce is lovingly remembered by her sons, Barry Burton of Brandon, Manitoba, and Gregory Olson of Elmvale, Ontario; and her numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Joyce was predeceased by her husband, Donald Ferguson; her mother, Goldie Keil; her father, Louis Calkins; her stepfather, Charles Keil; her sister, Darlene McNaughton; her bother, Stewart Calkins; and her beloved son, Randy Olson. A Memorial Service in Joyce’s honour will be held at Parkland Funeral Home at 6287 – 67A Street, Red Deer, Alberta on Tuesday, September 22, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. To view the livestream, please click the following link https://www.parklandfuneralhome.com/livestream just prior to 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joyce’s honour to Stars at https://give.stars.ca/page/126229/donate/1 and the SPCA at https://albertaspca.org/ways-to-help/donate/.
