After a brief illness our loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Betty Wheatley passed away on December 30, 2022 at the age of 94 years. Betty was born in Norwich, England on February 22, 1928. She attended technical school in Norwich, where she obtained her certificate in drafting. After the war, she met Stan Wheatley, after marrying in January 1952, Betty and Stan emigrated to Calgary. They purchased land in Spruce Cliff and together with Betty’s father designed and built their home where they lived and raised a family for over sixty years. After arriving in Canada, Betty worked as a draftsperson with Shell Oil, and continued to take on contract drafting work after starting a family. In the 1970’s Betty began volunteering with the Spruce Cliff Community Association, spending a number of years serving on their board. She also created and edited the Spruce Cliff Community Association News (SCAN). In 1976, recognizing the need for a gathering place for seniors in southwest Calgary, Betty proposed such a place as a project for Calgary’s centennial. Her vision and hard work led to the creation of Bow Cliff Seniors, now a well-established organization and Centre, serving older adults with a wide variety of activities and programs. Betty’s involvement with Bow Cliff Seniors continued for over forty years, including serving on the Board of Directors from 2007 to 2013. She was instrumental in driving a number of fund-raising projects and continued to serve in an advisory capacity on fundraising and as an active member of the Building Committee. Betty also spent a number of years as the coordinator for the annual Fall Fair at Heritage Park. She was also an accomplished watercolor artist. Betty is survived by her son Michael (Donna), daughters Sheila, Deborah (Dean) and Helen (Jeff), seventeen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Stan, her sister Patricia and her son Peter. A Celebration of Life in Betty’s honor will be held at a later date.
