Mr. John Cameron Bristow (JCB) passed away peacefully at the Innisfail Health Care Centre on July 24, 2021 with his family by his side, at the age of 97 years.
John was born June 17th, 1924, to Jack (John) William and Maude May Bristow in Islay, Alberta. John was a small-town boy and worked very hard alongside his 9 siblings: Beryl, Harold, Irene, Margaret, Phyllis, Alma, Myrtle, (John), Joe and Dalton.
Being the son of a Blacksmith and part of a large family there was no end to the chores and work that had to be done.
At the age of 17 John enlisted in the army and went to basic training in Vernon, British Columbia. John was deployed to England as part of the 5th Canadian Infantry Brigade. At the age of 18, he took part in the Raid at Dieppe, France August 19th, 1942. John was wounded in battle and convalesced in England before coming home to Islay almost 10 months later.
After returning home, John completed his education and became certified to begin his long successful career as a Manager (Superintendent) in the Oil & Gas industry designing and starting up Operations all over the world.
John was employed with CalTex and based out of New York City. He travelled around the world for work. Bahrain, Philippines, Spain, Italy, France, Switzerland to name a few.
John met the love of his life, Delta May Robinson on a blind date on August 1953, in Toronto.
They were married January 7th, 1955, and they spent the next several years travelling and living in Italy and France where John was then working. Ronald William was born 1956 and Douglas John in 1957 in France. John accepted the position of Manager of the Shell Canada, Innisfail Gas Plant in 1959, John and Delta built the family home and moved their young family to Innisfail in 1960. Carol Ann arrived in 1962 and Byron Cameron in 1965. Their family was complete.
During his career with Shell Canada, John also built and managed the Burnt Timber Complex from 1971 until 1984, he was also instrumental in the construction and expansions of the Waterton, Symonette, and Jumping Pound Facilities.
John was an active member of the Innisfail Community for many years. A lifetime member of the Legion and was awarded his 70 year membership pin in February 2015.
John enjoyed and excelled in many sports throughout his life. Playing baseball as a catcher, boxing, playing hockey, coaching hockey, curling, and golfing. John was an enthusiastic outdoorsman he loved training and hunting with his well-trained dogs.
One of John’s passions was the support and development of the Innisfail Golf Course. He was part of the conversion to grass greens in 1968 and the course expansion to 18 Holes in 1986, he coordinated the installation of the first irrigation and arranged for Shell Canada to donate all the pipe and fittings. John served as President and as a Director numerous times.
John enjoyed nothing more than entertaining family with his famous BBQ Roasts and baked beans. John loved to cook and spend time at Pigeon Lake with his siblings and their families over the years.
John and Delta enjoyed their beautiful yard and flowers for years keeping it looking so wonderful and entertaining family and friends there often.
John is lovingly remembered by his wife of 66 years Delta May Bristow. His children, Ron (Barb) Bristow, Doug (Jacqueline) Bristow, Carol Ann (Darcy) Stoyberg, Byron Bristow. His 8 grandchildren, Brandon (Jacquelyn) Bristow, Shawn (Nicole) Bristow, Tristan, Jonathan (Yvette) and Shannon Bristow, Reid and Dana Stoyberg and Dillon Bristow and his 5 great grandchildren, Nolan, Blake, Carson, Kamdon and Sylvia Delta. He will be sadly missed by his youngest brother Dalton Bristow, his sisters-in-law,Audrey, Glady, Laurine (Bill) and Patricia and brother-in-law Herb Robinson. Too many nieces and nephews to mention but they have all held a special place in their Uncle John’s heart.
We are heartbroken with the loss of Delta’s Husband, Our Father, Grandpa and Papa, but also thankful and blessed to have had him to love and share in our lives for so many years. Thank you for teaching us the most important things in life, by the way you have lived yours.
We will miss you dearly, but your stories and memories will keep you alive with us always. Your loving Family
