Mrs. Joyce Doris Wood passed away peacefully in her 100th year, on Tuesday, September 27, 2022. Joyce was born in Brighton, England on July 9, 1922. During WWII, she met her future husband, Ray, who was stationed nearby with the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals. They were married in March of 1942. Joyce and her son, John immigrated to Canada in 1943, after Ray was injured, and captured, during the Dieppe Raid. Upon his release from a P.O.W. camp in 1944, Ray joined his family in Calgary, Alberta. Their son, Terry came along shortly after. After retirement, Joyce and Ray moved to Salmon Arm, British Columbia, and enjoyed many years in the sunny Okanagan Valley. When Ray passed away in 1999, Joyce moved to Spruce Grove, Alberta, and then to Three Hills, Alberta, a few years later. Her final years were spent in Innisfail, Alberta. Joyce was an avid swimmer, gardener, and reader. She lived her life with quiet grace and dignity, but also had the sensibility and fortitude to manage any obstacle that came her way. Her can-do attitude inspired many who knew her, and her presence will be greatly missed. Joyce will be lovingly remembered by her son, Terry (Nancy), her daughter-in-law, Zelma, her granddaughters, Pamela (David) and Shauna (Scott), her great granddaughter, Nichole (Peter) and her great great granddaughters, Elaine and Penelope. She was predeceased by her husband, Ray, a son, John, her sisters, Margery and Olive, her mother, Winnifred and her father, Frank. A Gathering in Joyce’s honour will be held at the Allen Bungalow and Garden, Kerry Wood Nature Center, 6300 – 45 Avenue, Red Deer, Alberta on Saturday, October 8, 2022 from 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. If desired, Memorial Donations in Joyce’s honor may be made directly to the Calgary Horticultural Society at www.calhort.org.
