Margaret Ellen Grant
October 26, 1920 – August 21, 2022
Celebrating a long life lived with faith, love, fortitude, and resilience.
Margaret was born in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan, to Jack and Alice (Perrin) Young. In 1927 she moved with her parents and brother, Edwin (Ted), to a farm in the Waterside/Hainstock district west of Olds. She attended country schools at Ennerdale, Waterside, and Hainstock where she enjoyed learning and made many lifetime friends. After completing her schooling, she worked for the Ralph Moritz and John Pollack families. In 1941 Margaret married Richard (Dick) Grant and they became true partners in both raising their family and running a successful farming business. Although devastated by Dick’s untimely death in a motor vehicle accident in 1985, Margaret resolved to live her best life, and in 1991 moved to her new home on Shannon Drive in Olds. She was later to live in Legacy Village in Olds. In 2014, Margaret moved to Nanoose Bay, British Columbia, where she was lovingly cared for by her son, Don, and his wife, Nilda. In 2019, she was admitted to Eden Gardens Care Facility in Nanaimo. Over the years Margaret kept in touch with many friends and neighbours. She was thankful for, and enjoyed the many phone calls, letters, and visits which she received.
Margaret’s interests and travels were numerous. She was a dedicated wife, mom, grandma, and great grandma who nurtured and encouraged her family members in their many activities. Her house and yard were well kept, and coffee was always on. She spent many fall days operating a combine to help get the crops in. Over the years she was a member of the Hillcrest Community Association, Ennerdale Ladies Aid, Hainstock Home and School Association, Eagle Hill Curling Club, Olds Curling Club, Hainstock Centennial History Book Association, and Olds United Church. Her travels allowed her to see much of Canada and the mainland United States, Hawaii, China, Thailand, Malaysia, England, Scotland, Germany, and Italy.
