Rotary Clubs of Red Deer marking World Polio Day

Oct 18, 2018 | 9:19 AM

The Rotary Clubs of Red Deer invite you to join us for World Polio Day at the Welikoklad Event Centre on Wednesday, October 24.

Rotary members in Red Deer are among millions reaching out on World Polio Day to raise awareness, funds and support to end polio – a vaccine preventable disease that still threatens children in parts of the world today.

Find out how you can take part to End Polio Now, hear firsthand from a polio survivor, and watch this year’s livestream program from Philadelphia featuring global health experts and celebrities sharing our progress on the road to polio eradication.

Five facts about Polio:

– Polio mainly affects children under age 5
– There is no cure, but polio is preventable with a vaccine
– Only three countries remain endemic
– We’ve reduced cases by 99.9% since 1988
– Until we end polio forever, every child is at risk.

Poliovirus is spread person to person, typically through contaminated water. It can attack the nervous system, and in some instances, lead to paralysis. Although there is no cure, there is a safe and effective vaccine – one which Rotary and our partners use to immunize over 2.5 billion children worldwide. Rotary has contributed more than US$1.7 billion to ending polio since 1985, including over $3,000,000 contributed by our local District 5360.

Please join us at the Welikoklad Event Centre in downtown Red Deer on October 24. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with the event getting underway at 7 p.m. Admission is free.

Participate in making history while getting your pinkie painted purple and partaking in refreshments on a donation basis. We will be showing this year’s livestream program featuring global health experts and celebrities sharing our progress on the road to polio eradication. The City of Red Deer will be proclaiming Oct. 24 as “World Polio Day in Red Deer.”

Join in. Speak out. Donate.
