The Red Deer Rebels came to play on Saturday night… big-time.

By the end of the night in Regina, the visiting side had put up nine goals on the Pats, including three from the team’s leading scorer Brandon Hagel.

The final score was 9-4 and Red Deer improved to 3-0 on their four-game road trip which began Wednesday in Swift Current before the Rebels embarked to Brandon for a Friday night win over the Wheat Kings. The trip wraps up this Friday in Lethbridge.

On Saturday, Red Deer came out strong in the first period, skating to the intermission with a 2-0 lead.

Jeff de Wit scored first at 6:27, his 22nd of the season, and then Captain Reese Johnson scored at 12:45, his 19th.

In the second, the hole got deeper for Regina as Brett Davis would score short-handed at 4:44. For Davis, it was his 14th goal of the year and 7th in 14 games since coming to Red Deer via trade.

Now 3-0 Rebels, Regina finally got on the board with a powerplay marker at 6:05 from Sebastian Streu, his 4th.

Red Deer came back right away to restore the three-goal lead just 45 seconds later, Brandon Hagel getting his first of three on the night and 24th of the season.

Josh Tarzwell added to the rout at 9:30 of the frame with his 6th to make it 5-1 Red Deer.

Garrett Wright potted his 3rd of the year with 4:23 remaining in the middle frame to cut the lead to 5-2 headed to the third period.

In the third, Regina got off to the start they needed as Duncan Pierce would find twine just 1:22 in for his 5th, and it was suddenly a two-goal game at 5-3.

Then, at 3:58, Brandon Hagel tallied again to make it 6-3.

The Pats’ Brady Pouteau scored his 1st of the season short-handed at 13:03, but 6-4 is as close as Regina would come.

Hagel (26th), for the hat trick, scored a minute later, before Zak Smith (9th) tallied on the PP, and Oleg Zaytsev sent the Rebels home laughing with his 8th to close out the game.

Six Rebels had multi-point games, including Alexander Alexeyev and Dawson Barteaux, each of whom had two assists. Meanwhile, de Wit had a goal and an assist, Tarzwell and Davis added one goal and two apples each, and Brandon Hagel had the three goals to go along with two assists.

Hagel climbed back into the top five of league scoring with his outburst Saturday night, and now has 26 goals and 40 assists for 66 points in 40 games. That is 13 behind league-leading Joachim Blichfeld of the Portland Winterhawks (who’s played three more games).

Between the pipes, Byron Fancy got the nod for the third time in four games, and earned his second win this week after going without one since Nov. 11. Fancy stopped 24 of 28 shots in the win, improving his record to 4-4 in 12 appearances.

Shots were 28 apiece Saturday night, while Red Deer went 2/4 on the man advantage, and Regina was 1/6.

After the win, Red Deer (25-13-2-1) remains in second place in the Central Division, tied with Edmonton at 53 points, and one point behind Lethbridge with a game in hand. Medicine Hat has 50, Calgary has 46, and Kootenay has 23.

Up next for the Rebels is the final game of their current four-game road trip, on which they are currently 3-0. They meet with the Hurricanes in Lethbridge this Friday starting at 7 p.m. The broadcast can be heard LIVE on 106.7 The Drive starting at 6:50.
