Oct 27, 2018 | 7:17 PM

Adriana LaGrange will be the United Conservative Party’s candidate in next year’s election for the constituency of Red Deer – North

LaGrange defeated fellow nominees Cole Kander and current Red Deer city councillor Lawrence Lee.

UCP leader Jason Kenney issued the following statement Saturday night on LaGrange’s victory:

“Today more than 900 United Conservative members in Red Deer North voted to choose their candidate for the next election from amongst three great contestants.

“I would like to congratulate Adriana LaGrange on winning this hotly contested race.

“Adriana is a passionate advocate for education, currently serving as a the vice-chair of Red Deer Catholic Regional School Board of Trustees. She brings a wealth of experience from working directly on education policy, as well as her time raising her seven kids and three grandkids. I am pleased to welcome Adriana to the United Conservative team.

“I would also like to thank Cole Kander, Lawrence Lee, and their teams for their participation in the democratic process and dedication to our movement.”

LaGrange has served as a school trustee with Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools since 2007. She is also the former president of the Alberta Catholic School Trustees’ Association and former vice-president of the Canadian Catholic School Trustees’ Association.

It’s not yet clear if LaGrange will stay on as trustee in the lead-up to next year’s provincial election. If she were to step away, there would need to be a by-election to replace her.

A statement from Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools on Monday says that LaGrange will clarify her intentions at the school board’s meeting on Tuesday.

“On behalf of the Board, I wish to congratulate Adriana LaGrange on her election as the UCP candidate for Red Deer North. She worked hard and ran a strong and honest campaign, and we are all proud of her,” says Board Chair Anne Marie Watson. “Adriana has notified me that she is prepared to make a formal announcement about her future as a Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools Trustee at our regular board meeting this Tuesday, October 30, at 6:30 p.m.”
