Rebels fall to Hurricanes in shootout

Nov 6, 2026 | 10:38 PM

The Red Deer Rebels scored late in the third period to send it to overtime, but the Lethbridge Hurricanes came out on top 5-4 in the shootout.

On Friday night in Lethbridge, both teams were held scoreless in the extra frame until round seven of the shootout, when Red Deer product Easton Daneault scored to lift the Hurricanes to victory.

As a result, the Rebels’ four-game winning streak came to an end; however, since the game did go to overtime, they did gain a single point to continue to sit on top of the WHL with an 11-4-1-2 record.

The Hurricanes outshot the Rebels 41-33, but Red Deer had the upper hand in special teams, scoring two goals on three power plays. They also held the Hurricanes scoreless on five power plays.

In the first period, Rebels defenceman Matus Lisy got the Rebels on the board with 6:16 remaining. His shot from the blue line on the power play beat the Hurricanes on his glove side.

The Hurricanes then scored back-to-back goals within the final five minutes of the opening period from Gavin Lesiuk and Owen Berge.

Rebels forward Cameron Kuzma found the equalizer 15 seconds into the second period to continue his strong play as of late.

He entered the offensive zone with plenty of speed and ripped a shot past the goaltender.

The Hurricanes then took a 4-2 lead with goals from Grady Pichette and Jake Evans.

Despite that, Rebels Poul Andersen, who leads the league in points and goals, scored his 16th goal of the season.

He tipped a shot past the goalie in front of the net off the feed from Jake Banicevic on the power play.

In the third period, Rebels forward Patrick Sopiarz tied the game 4-4 at the midway point to send it to overtime.

After neither team could find the back of the net in overtime, the Hurricanes and Rebels went through a combined 12 shooters before Daneault ended it.

Rebels netminder Matthew Kondro stopped 36 of 40 shots faced; meanwhile, Hurricanes Leif Oaten made 29 saves on 33 shots.

Next up, the Rebels will host the Prince Albert Raiders on Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Centrium.
