New Alberta omnibus bill includes consumer protection, property rights

Oct 28, 2026 | 3:31 PM

The UCP government has introduced wide-ranging legislation, it hopes, will safeguard Albertans in the areas of consumer protection and property rights.

The changes are contained inside an omnibus bill, Bill 34, the Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction Statutes Amendment Act.

Included in the document – help for owners of vehicles under warranty with manufacturing defects that can’t be fixed, even after repeated repair attempts.

Along the same lines, the document removes barriers for owners, including farmers, to get to parts, tools, and repair information on products and equipment they own.

The bill, if passed, also covers the buying of resale tickets to concerts, sporting events and other live events, with new rules requiring clear disclosure of prices and fees.

“Whether you’re buying a vehicle, fixing something you own, or buying tickets to your favourite events, you deserve to know you’re protected,” says Minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction Dale Nally.

The Province says it’s also looking at shielding landowners by re-establishing the Surface Rights Board after changes were made back in 2021.

“We’re putting common sense back into the rules and giving Albertans more control over their hard-earned money and the things they own,” Nally added.

The bill passed first reading in the Legislature Wednesday afternoon.
