Mr. Bernard Joseph “Bernie” York passed away at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre on Monday, September 21, 2026, at the age of 69 years. Bernie spent most of his married life in car sales in Red Deer and High River, where his genuine care for others and warm way with people earned him Salesman of the Year. After retiring from sales, he embraced a new chapter as a part-time school bus driver with Prairie Bus—a role that brought him quiet joy as he connected with the children and families in his community. Bernie had a deep love of animals, especially raising and training quarter horses in the High River area. He also cherished the outdoors and loved fishing and hunting, and sharing these treasured adventures with his boys Charles and Chris, and his grandson Kolton. Whether with family, friends, or the wider community, Bernie gave of himself freely and left a lasting impression of kindness and warmth on everyone who knew him.
Bernie was a devoted and loving husband to Deborah York; a proud and caring father to Christopher and Charles York (Claire Palsat); and a cherished grandfather to Lacey, Kolton, Isabelle and Jesse York. He leaves behind his beloved mother, Helen York; his mother-in-law, Beverley Tremblay; and his brothers, William and Thomas York; along with many dear friends who were touched by his kindness and generosity. Bernie is predeceased by his father, Gilbert York; and his sister, Cindy Lewis. He held his family close to his heart and found his greatest joy in the time he spent with them.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff on Unit 32 for their kindness and compassion during Bernie’s stay, with special mention to Dr. Reyes, Dr. Swainson, and Dr. Yam.
