With deep sadness and immeasurable love, the family of Larry William Czerniak announce his passing in Olds, Alberta, on Sunday, September 20, 2026, at the age of 67 years, after a courageous battle with lung cancer.
Born in Olds on May 31, 1959, Larry was the first child of William ‘Bill’ and Gloria Czerniak, and from the start he carried the spirited, kind-hearted nature that would define his life. Larry had a heart of gold, making friends wherever he went and was an excellent conversationalist. His ability to live life unapologetically, on his own terms, left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him. Larry was a man of many talents and skills: a dedicated outdoor enthusiast with an infectious passion for exploring nature, a meticulous carpenter, respected welder, and gifted baker.
He took immense pride in his children: Robin Czerniak, Brandon Czerniak (Krystal), and Kassidy ‘Kassie’ Czerniak (Chris). Being their dad was one of the greatest joys of his life, and he loved sharing stories of his children with everyone he met. He cherished every moment spent with his children, sharing their interests, listening to their stories, and passing on the wisdom and lessons he had learned throughout his life. Each of his children carries qualities, values, and traits that reflect the very best of who he was.
A giant kid with an even bigger heart, nothing brought him greater joy than being “Grandpa Larry” to his beloved grandchildren and the young people he welcomed as family. Whether it was playing, talking, learning something new, or simply spending time together, he never missed an opportunity to join in. He had a remarkable ability to be fully present in whatever mattered to them, making each of them feel seen, valued, and loved. Kali Lavay (Scot) was his first and only grandchild for many years. She was the light of his life, and he played an instrumental role in her childhood, helping Robin raise Kali. She has many memories that she will hold close to her heart, including him singing and dancing to the ‘Hokey Pokey’. As an only child, Kali found a chosen sister in Lauren Taylor, and true to his soft-hearted nature, Larry happily became a grandfather figure to her, too.
Larry shared an extraordinary bond with Brandon and Krystal’s son, Liam. The two spent countless hours together going on adventures around the farm and hauling grain from the fields in the old blue truck. They both treasured every moment, talking machinery, sharing snacks, and laughing endlessly as Liam taught Grandpa Larry everything he needed to know about modern agricultural equipment.
He adored Kassie and Chris’s daughter, Elyza, who delighted in her FaceTime dates with Grandpa Larry. She affectionately called him “Ampa,” or “Grumps,” a nickname Larry embraced with pride and humor. Baby Clifton, only six months old, was just beginning his own special bond with Larry — a relationship filled with promise, love, and the gentle warmth Larry gave so freely.
Larry leaves behind the mothers of his children, Shelley (Robin & Brandon) and Linda Hamvas (Kassie), both of whom he valued greatly. He is lovingly remembered by his mother, Gloria Czerniak of Sundre, Alberta; his brother, Steve Czerniak (Pam Martens) of Sundre, Alberta; and his sister Shawna Werstiuk (Darryl Werstiuk) of Glendon, Alberta. Larry will also be deeply missed by his nephew, Corey Sanderson, nieces, Elissa Sanderson and Mattea Czerniak, along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who will miss his presence dearly. Larry also leaves behind his chosen family, the Supernants of Olds, Alberta, whom he loved dearly. The passing of his lifelong friend Les Supernant in 2021, with whom he shared many adventures over the years, left a mark on Larry’s heart, and those who knew him understood how profoundly Les’s loss affected him.
The Blue Yak community also represents an important part of his life, and the friendships he built there were ones he treasured deeply. He considered many in this community his ‘non-blood family’ and was humbled by the support and camaraderie he received at the ‘million dollar table’. Whether sharing stories, jokes, a cup of coffee, or simply offering a listening ear, Larry’s presence brought warmth to those around him. Larry was predeceased by his father, Bill Czerniak, his grandparents, Nick and Hasia Czerniak, and Cliff and Lorraine Mennear, and his dear friend, Les Supernault.
A LIFE OF CRAFTMANSHIP, CHARACTER, AND HEART
Larry began his working life in carpentry, a trade he loved and excelled in. Eventually, the oilfield called his name, and he pursued welding, earning his welding certificate and becoming highly sought after for his exceptional skill. Larry’s work ethic was legendary. While most measured in eighths, Larry measured in thirty-seconds. His precision, whether in carpentry, welding, or cooking, was unmatched. Larry’s talents extended far beyond the trades. He was an exceptional cook and baker. While living with Shawna and Darryl, Larry became known throughout the neighborhood for his Sourdough Cinnamon Buns, mixed and baked to absolute perfection. His kitchen creations were just another way he shared love with those around him.
He found peace, connection, and adventure at his gold-mining claim in northern British Columbia, making many trips to the remote location over the years and even building his own highbankers. Larry was also an avid fisherman who spent many days casting a line along the banks of the Red Deer River with Robin and Brandon. These trips became some of their happiest memories together, filled with laughter, stories, and the life lessons he so generously shared. The wisdom he imparted will remain with them, carried forward as a lasting part of his legacy. Through his patience and knowledge, he sparked a lifelong appreciation for nature in each of his children. All three love the outdoors and camping, while Brandon and Robin inherited his unbridled enthusiasm for fishing. Robin also had a keen interest in rock collecting and foraging for plants, always curious about the natural world and the things it has to offer. Larry also had an immense love for animals, especially dogs. He cherished time spent with Angus and Rusty, and anyone who entrusted their beloved pets to Larry knew they were in the very best of hands. His gentle nature and affection for animals were evident to everyone who saw him with them.
FOREVER LOVED
Larry’s life was defined by love for his family, his friends, his work, and the simple joys that made each day meaningful. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew him, in the stories shared, and in the memories treasured forever. In keeping with Larry’s wishes, no formal Funeral Service will be held. His family will hold a Private Celebration of Life at a later date.
