The Red Deer Rebels are back in the win column.

On Friday night in Saskatoon, the Rebels defeated the Blades 4-2 following an explosive first period.

Captain Beckett Hamilton led the way with a goal and two assists, and forward Poul Andersen added two goals. Rebels goaltender Matthew Kondro also made 17 saves on 19 shots.

The Rebels took the lead 2:53 into the first period following a perfect shot from Hamilton. His shot beat the goaltender after he fired it through traffic in front of the net.

Meanwhile, Andersen scored back-to-back goals to give the Rebels a 3-0 lead.

His first came just 36 seconds after Red Deer’s opening goal, when Andersen buried a rebound opportunity. Hamilton earned an assist on the play.

Andersen’s second of the night came with 6:13 into the opening period , assisted by Hamilton once again. Andersen made his way to the right side of the net, and Hamilton connected with him on a backdoor feed.

In the second period, the Rebels extended their lead to 4-0 off the stick of Cameron Kuzma, who fired in a rebound while driving to the net.

However, Red Deer took their foot off the gas pedal, and the Blades capitalized before the end of the period.

The Blades found the scoresheet with 8:10 left in the second period. Saskatoon rookie Igor Gusev scored his first WHL goal, assisted by David Lewandowski.

With just over a minute and a half left in the second, Saskatoon captain Brayden Klimpke cut the Rebels’ lead in half on a power-play goal.

In the third period, the Rebels tightened up defensively and, despite committing a five-minute major penalty for boarding, hung on for the 4-2 victory. The Rebels came out on top even though Blades outshot them 29-27.

Red Deer were held scoreless on three power-play opportunities, and the Blades scored one power-play goal on six chances.

With the win, the Rebels’ record improves to 3-2-0-1, and they move into first place in the Eastern Conference standings.

Poul Andersen is also now tied for the WHL lead in scoring with nine points. Beckett Hamilton is just behind him with eight points and leads the league with five goals through the first six games.

Next up, the Rebels will head to Moose Jaw for a Saturday matchup at 6 p.m. with the Warriors.
