In Loving Memory of Justin McKinnon Asselin
December 25, 2003 – September 25, 2026
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Justin McKinnon Asselin, who died on September 25, 2026, at the age of 22.
Justin was born on December 25, 2003 — “just in” time for Christmas. From the very beginning, he brought his own special light into the lives of those around him.
Justin had a great sense of humour and a wonderfully creative imagination. He loved to build things, especially with LEGO, and could spend hours bringing his ideas to life. He had a natural ability to make people laugh and a personality that was uniquely his own.
He had a deep love for animals, especially his beloved pets, Keetah, Alvin and Gloria. His compassion extended beyond animals; Justin cared deeply about other people and could not stand to see someone being mistreated. He had a particularly protective heart when it came to his little sister, Jordyn. Being her big brother was something he took seriously, and he loved teasing her, looking out for her, and reminding her — whether she wanted the advice or not — that he was there for her.
Sports were an important part of Justin’s life. Football was his passion, and on the field, he was affectionately known as “Chaos.” He loved playing defence and kicking, and he brought his own energy, determination, and personality to the game. He also participated in lacrosse, rugby, hockey, soccer, and golf. He loved being active, being part of a team, and spending time with friends.
Justin also had a playful side and loved to dress up, showing his creativity and sense of humour in everything, he did. He cherished his family and friends and the time he spent with the people he loved.
Justin struggled with mental health challenges in the beginning of his young adult life, and his family witnessed the strength and courage it took for him to navigate those challenges. Through it all, he remained deeply loved by his family and those who knew him.
Justin will be deeply missed by his father, Claude Asselin; his mother, Tracey McKinnon; and his beloved sister, Jordyn. He is also survived by his grandmother, Betty McKinnon, and his aunts and uncles Lucie, Colette, Nicole, Léa, Jeanne, Denis, Renée, Trevor, and Teri, along with their spouses and his 20 first cousins.
Justin was predeceased by his grandparents Ronald McKinnon, Fernand, and Thérèse Asselin, and his uncle Roger Asselin.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Justin’s memory may be made to the SPCA in Red Deer, in honour of his lifelong love and compassion for animals.
