Norma Spicer (nee Hehr)
With great sadness, the family of Norma Spicer (nee Hehr) announces the passing of their beloved Mom September 11, 2026 at Red Deer, AB. Mom will be deeply missed by her eldest daughter Joy Barber and her husband Scott; her son Darcy Spicer; her daughter Joanne Paquet and her husband, Marcel; and her grandson, Joel Paquet.
Mom was predeceased by her parents, Gottfred and Sophia Hehr, and by her siblings Clifford, Norman, Allan, Paul, and Edna Fleck. She is survived by her sister, Delphine (Melvin) Schultz, and her brother, Raymond (Darlene) Hehr.
Mom was born on June 20, 1935, in Crossfield, AB. She grew up on a farm east of town before moving to Calgary where she worked in a downtown bank. She later moved to Carstairs, where she married and raised her three children on the farm. A gifted piano player, Mom loved playing for Sunday morning church services, church singing groups, and for many weddings. She had great pride in her home and worked extremely hard caring for her family by planting large gardens, cooking for her family, cooking for the hired farm help, and for the family friends who would fill our home on Sunday evenings and holidays. She would decorate our home in the latest trends with many of her DYI projects. She loved to sew, designing clothes for herself and her family, always dressing in the latest fashions. Mom loved to joke with others and had an extremely witty sense of humour. Our family later moved to Red Deer where she remained. In Mom’s late 30s, she developed rheumatoid arthritis which changed her life. The arthritis made everything she did a struggle. Through her strong will and determination, she was able to live independently for many years.
Mom, we are grateful for the life you gave us, the memories we shared, the laughter you brought us, and the example you set. As we mourn your passing, we do so with deep gratitude for the many years we were blessed to have you in our lives. We will miss you and we love you.
Our family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the care workers on the sixth floor at Taylor Towers North for the wonderful care they provided to Mom over the last four years. Their dedication, kindness, and compassion brought comfort to our family and will always be deeply appreciated.
We wish to extend our thanks to Meaningful Memorials Funeral Service for the service they provided in our time of sorrow.
A celebration of Mom’s life will be shared with close family at a later date.
