I am the Bread of Life
Of all the early teachings of Jesus is the incredibly rich parable of the bread of life.
It is incredibly significant, deep and yet so simple in its concept that it alone could sustain a lifetime of study, prayer and practise. We will focus on these in the next few columns.
In John 6, we find one of the tellings of the feeding of the 5,000, in which a crowd had followed Jesus into the wilderness, and after teaching and healing them, a question was asked by Jesus in verse 5 of Philip.
“When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, ‘Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?’ 6 He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do. 7 Philip answered him, ‘It would take more than half a year’s wages[a] to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!'”
