Alexander (Alec) Huhn was born in September 1940, and passed away peacefully on September 2, 2026.

In 1950, Alec arrived in Canada with his family, his parents, Magdelene and Josef, and his sister, speaking only German and carrying a single trunk between them.  After making Red Deer their home, Alec’s brother, Ralph, became the final piece of their family.  From those humble beginnings grew a remarkable 75-year story of hard work, family, and quiet resilience.

Alec boarded the Beaverbrae in Germany at nine years old. At nineteen, he took a job at Snell & Oslund surveying, a job that ended up lasting an incredible 50 years. He married the love of his life, Janice, in 1972, beginning the partnership that would become the foundation of everything he built. The cabin he bought as a young bachelor became the place that would remain his sanctuary for decades. Summers were spent there with Janice, their three boys and treasured family and friends.  It was there you’d find him tending to his chickens, gardening, tinkering with his many projects, or simply sitting by the fire in his spot, eating his lunch. Once the boys had grown up and moved on Alec still spent every Wednesday and Saturday driving his old Tacoma to the cabin for the day.

He loved a good book, a good story, a good laugh and a good crowd at the cabin.  If you needed honest advice spoken without sugarcoating, he was your man.  Alec relished in the simple things – a tasty meal, tending to his garden, a good day splitting wood, or the quiet of a day spent fishing. This is where dad found his heaven – in the small, honest moments of life.  It’s where we all do, thanks to him.

To Red Deer Hospice – words cannot express our deep gratitude for giving him the heartfelt care he had become so accustomed to from his adoring wife all these years.  We will never forget your kindness.

Now reunited with his beloved son Chris and sister Marie, we will grieve his loss here on earth but celebrate his love that lives on in all of us.

Family and friends are invited to join us for a casual gathering in remembrance of Alec on Thursday, September 24, from 1:00–3:00 p.m. at Pioneer Lodge in Red Deer.

There will be no formal funeral service. Instead, we invite you to stop by anytime during the afternoon to share a bite to eat, visit with family and friends, and take some time to remember and celebrate Alec’s life.

We hope the fish are biting on the other side. We love you.
