Grete Stella Tomsic
Grete passed away peacefully on August 27, 2026, in Red Deer, Alberta, surrounded by her children.
Grete is lovingly remembered by her children, Irene (Stephen) Welton, Steven (Nicole) Tomsic, and Connie (Kelly) Slepicka; her three grandchildren, Hailey, Kayden, and Wray; her sister’s family, the Andersens; and many dear friends. Grete was predeceased by her husband, Mijo Tomsic.
Grete was born in Højerup, Denmark, on December 31, 1938. She worked as a nanny in Denmark before joining her sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Tage, in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada, in 1962. Grete worked and lived in Red Deer before eventually moving to Edmonton, where she met Mike and married him in 1965. Edmonton was home for more than 50 years, until Mike passed away in 2016 and Grete relocated to Red Deer.
Grete had many friends and loved spending time with them over coffee and desserts. She enjoyed bowling, sewing, knitting, and gardening. Later in life, she had the opportunity to travel, with Honolulu, Hawaii, becoming her favourite destination. Her most cherished moments were those spent with her three grandchildren, whom she cared for, played with, and loved deeply.
Grete remained active until her final days, taking daily walks and loving her time outdoors. She will be greatly missed.
At Grete’s request, no funeral service will be held. In her memory, Mom would love for you to go for a walk in a park and remember her that way.
The family is sincerely grateful to the staff of Bethany CollegeSide Gardens and Red Deer Regional Hospital.
Memorial donations may be made to the Red Deer Regional Hospital Foundation or to a hospital foundation of your choice.
