Dennis Karpan of Innisfail, Alberta passed away on Saturday, August 8, 2026 at the age of 74 years.

Dennis was born in Spirit River, Alberta on April 26, 1952 to John and Ann Karpan (Krpan). At that time the family lived on a farm in Wanum, Alberta. In 1958, following the loss of Dennis’s grandma Serdy, the family chose to move to Rocky Mountain House, Alberta to be closer to his grandpa Serdy. At a young age Dennis quickly stepped into his role as the second oldest sibling, looking after his sisters. He was an amazing cook right from an early age, whipping up signature family meals, especially his famous goulash, for Trish and Linda. Dennis shared a uniquely close bond with his sisters, always covering for them when they got into trouble, a kindness they would later pay back. Although known for his quiet nature, his adventurous spirit grew during his teens when he joined the sea cadets and met his lifelong friend, Norman Stephens. Together, the duo spent their teen years raising a bit of good-natured havoc. Dennis also spent time hanging out with his sister Trish and spent time away on the rigs working for this dad and older brother, Mike. Through it all, whether he was looking after his family, working a tough shift, rough housing with his brother or causing a little mischief, Dennis always found time for socializing, cooking, and hockey.

Dennis dated, his first love and his high school sweetheart, Patricia ‘Pat’ Karpan for three years, before marrying her in March of 1973. They first lived in Black Diamond where Dennis, like many of his family members, worked on the rigs. After a short while Dennis left the rigs to work for a natural gas company in Calgary, Alberta. During their time in Black Diamond, Dennis and Pat started their family and welcomed their first born, Jody. After a year, Dennis rejoined the rigs and moved his family back to Rocky Mountain House where he worked on the rig for Kenting Drilling as well as pipefitting and oilfield maintenance for Doran Steward Oilfield Services Ltd. For the next seventeen years Dennis and Pat enjoyed the country and farm life, good food, drink, golfing, curling, camping, hiking, horseback riding, skiing and the close bonds and laughter from a large and strong family and friend circle. Rooted in a deep love for one another, Dennis and Pat continued building their family which, to their surprise, led to the birth of twin girls, Marcia and Cindy. Three years later, Dennis joined Wilson Oilfield Supply Ltd. as a pump technician, offering him the opportunity to be close to his family at home. Due to the ebbs and flows of the oil patch, Dennis was laid off in 1986. In 1987, after just a few months off, Dennis landed a new job with Franklin Supply Co. Ltd. as a pump technician, which led to Dennis and their family packing up and moving to Brooks, Alberta. After twenty years together, Dennis and Pat separated and divorced in 1991.

In 1993, soon after Dennis joined the Brooks Legion (Branch No. 63), he met Patricia A. Clark. They hit it off quickly and soon developed a close bond with Pat’s daughter, Tish and son, Wade. In 1994, after falling in love, Dennis and Pat decided to move to Innisfail, Alberta. Dennis transferred to the Red Deer Franklin Supply Co. location, continuing with his pump technician role until 1995 when Dennis started working for Quinn Pumps. Dennis and Pat married in June of 1999 and for the next twenty-five years they continued to live a life full of strong connections with family and friends. They attended the Innisfail Legion (Branch No. 104) every Friday enjoying the company of many long-lasting and great friends, honoring the Legion by religiously wearing red on Fridays while betting on the weekly meat draw and horse races, and dancing up a storm. Dennis and Pat enjoyed years of good drink, card games, camping, golfing, bowling, traveling, and lots of laughter, surrounded by family and friends. In 2006, Dennis left Quinn Pumps to work for Prime Pump Industries. He also worked a short time at Home Depot before retiring in 2020. In retirement Dennis spent his days puttering, always making sure his lawn looked amazing, the Christmas decorations were the envy of the street, while maintaining strong connections with his family, work family and friends, not to mention parenting and keeping their sweet dog company. After the passing of his wife in 2024, Dennis picked up gardening and built a sunflower bed in effort to keep her spirit close.

Dennis will forever be loved, and remembered by family and friends as a kind, gentle, quiet, gentlehearted, sincere, loving gentleman that would always greet you with a smile, always say he was fine even in his lowest moments, loved sharing good stories, laughter and even silence, while in the good company of his family and friends. He was very seldom displeased, and you would only know it by the slightest facial expression, the movements of his eyes and eyebrows.

Dennis is lovingly remembered by his daughters, Jody (Brian) Ring, Tish (Chris) Clark, and Cindy Karpan and his son, Wade (Nicole) Clark, as well as his nine grandchildren, Maria (Bryce) Andrus, Kendra (Ritchie) Ring, Tristan (Emma) Ring, Madison Clark, Brayden Ring, Nicholas Clark, Kittanna Clark, Kamea Clark, Harely Clark. He will also be deeply missed by his brother, Mike (Lil) Karpan, and his sisters, Trish (Norman) Stephens and Linda (Gerry) Psikla. Dennis was pre-deceased by his grandfather, Michael Serdy in 1991, his father, John Karpan in 1994, his daughter, Marcia Karpan in 2015, his wife, Patricia A. Karpan in 2024, and his mother, Ann Karpan in 2025.
