It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Carmen Maria Boake (née Arocha), who passed away peacefully on July 29, 2026, at the age of 81, shortly after being diagnosed with cancer.

Carmen was born in Sancti Spiritus, Cuba on June 15, 1945. In 1964, she immigrated to Red Deer, Alberta, where she built a rich and meaningful life, but never lost touch with her Cuban roots. She worked as a nurse, social worker, Spanish teacher, manager, but found her passion working at Parkland Garden Centre. She was a fantastic, creative cook; loved entertaining people in her home; and spent countless hours creating her beloved oasis, her garden.

She deeply valued her friends and family, and was well-loved by all who knew her. She was predeceased by her husband Dr. Ken Boake. She is survived by her family, including her children, Les (Aki) Boake, and Erin (Dan) Boake, her stepchildren Kelly (Len) Beauchamp, Leah (Mike) Butler, and Noreen Edgar, as well as her many grandchildren, Maria, Eloise, and Kai, and Sarah, Kristopher, Jesse, Terrance, David, John, Matthew, Elizabeth, and Anna, and their children. She will also be lovingly remembered by her nieces and nephews, and by her chosen family in Cuba, Florida and Spain.

A celebration of Carmen’s life will be held at a later date to commemorate the legacy of a woman whose warmth, compassion and vitality profoundly touched the lives of everyone around her. Donations may be made in her honour to the Red Deer Hospice Society.
