Gail Armstrong

It is with sadness that the family of Gail Armstrong of Sylvan Lake, Alberta, announces her passing on June 29, 2026, at the age of 85.

Gail was born on May 9, 1941, in Fort Macleod, Alberta, to Harold Smith and Gertrude Smith (Hanrahan), both of whom predeceased her.

She was also predeceased by her husband, H. Earl Armstrong; her son, Glen Armstrong; and her sister, Dixie Smith. Gail will be laid to rest alongside her beloved son, Glen, reunited at last.

Gail will be lovingly remembered by her children, Colleen Armstrong (Jeff VanLaar), Brian Armstrong, and Joanne Arifin. She was a proud Grande to McKenna Armstrong-VanLaar, Braedon Armstrong-VanLaar, Ben Arifin, Emma Arifin, and Sage Rodgers, who will forever treasure her love, wisdom, and unwavering support.

She is also survived by her brothers, Ross Smith (Carol Smith) and Sam Smith, along with extended family members and many dear friends.

A talented chef by trade, Gail had a gift for bringing people together through food. Her “celebrity status” first began years ago in Calgary with Monkey Herman, and it followed her all the way to Sylvan Lake, where she became fondly known as the beloved crusader “The Tree House Granny.” As she’d say herself – with Gail, it was “always a production”.

Gail was known for being direct, honest, and deeply caring. She spoke her mind with sincerity, loved fiercely, and was always there when you needed her. Her strength, resilience, and genuine nature touched the lives of all who knew her. 

A Celebration of Gail’s Life will be held on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, from 1:00PM to 4:00PM at the Sylvan Lake Legion.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to everyone who has offered their love, support, and kindness during this difficult time. Gail’s memory will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
