It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Ruth Elinor Bergeron (née Younie) on July 5, 2026, at the age of 77, surrounded by the love of her family.

Ruth was born on February 25, 1949, in Beardmore, Ontario, to Norman and Myrtle Younie. As the daughter of a military family, she spent her childhood living on several military bases across Canada before meeting the love of her life, Paul Bergeron. They were married in 1965 and built a life founded on love, devotion, and family. In 1974, they settled in Innisfail, Alberta, where they raised their two sons and created a home that was always open to family and friends.

Ruth will be forever loved and deeply missed by her devoted husband of 61 years, Paul; her sons, Paul Jr. (Brenda) Bergeron and Raymond (Jodi) Bergeron; and her treasured grandchildren, Kimberly, Olivia, and Sophie, who brought her endless joy and pride. She is also lovingly remembered by her siblings, John Younie, Darlene (Bob) Drouin, Norman Younie Jr., Corrine Younie, and Doug Younie, along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many dear friends.

She was predeceased by her parents, Norman and Myrtle Younie; her brother, Barry Younie; and her sister-in-law, Vicky Younie, beloved wife of Ruth’s brother John.

Ruth was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Family was the centre of her world, and her greatest joy came from bringing people together. She poured her heart into every gathering, creating memorable occasions for family and friends filled with love, laughter, and incredible spreads of homemade food and snacks that ensured no one ever left hungry.

Her grandchildren were the light of her life. She cherished every opportunity to watch and support them, whether it was cheering from the stands at softball games and water polo matches, applauding at swimming competitions and ballet recitals, or simply celebrating each milestone in their lives. She was their biggest fan and loved every moment she was able to spend with them.

Ruth treasured her friendships and was happiest when sharing stories, laughter, and meaningful conversations. Her lifelong friendships, especially with Sandi Coffey, Ruthie Scott, and her sister Corrine, brought her immeasurable joy. Whether enjoying long lunches, shopping trips, or spirited games of Trivial Pursuit, the real joy was simply being together. Ruth’s warmth, infectious laugh, thoughtful advice, and unwavering support made her a cherished friend to many.

Ruth also dedicated much of her life to volunteering and helping those less fortunate, always willing to lend a hand to someone in need. She believed deeply in treating people with kindness, fairness, and respect, and was never afraid to stand up for someone who needed a voice. She generously gave her time and energy to causes that reflected her values, including women’s rights, LGBTQ+ equality, and social justice. Ruth believed everyone deserved to be treated with dignity and respect, and she wasn’t afraid to peacefully march, advocate, or speak up when she believed it could help make the world a kinder and more just place. Her compassion, courage, and generosity left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know her.

In 2016, Ruth received the incredible gift of a double lung transplant. With remarkable determination and strength, she made a full recovery and was blessed with another ten years of life. Those years were a true gift, allowing her to watch her grandchildren grow into young women and to continue making treasured memories with the people she loved most.

Ruth will be remembered for her kindness, quiet strength, generosity, and unwavering love for her family. Her legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched through her compassion, her service, and the unconditional love she gave so freely.

A Celebration of Ruth’s Life will be held on August 22, 2026, at 2:00 pm in the event room of Sierras of Heritage Village, 5300 – 48 St. Red Deer AB.
